With the festive season now behind us, the next big occasion to look forward to is Black Friday. While the term originates from western countries, you’ve probably heard it more often in the past couple of years. That’s because Black Friday sales are quickly picking up pace in the rest of the world, including India. But just what is Black Friday, and why does it have tech lovers flipping through browser tabs in the middle of the night? Here’s your quick crash course to everything Black Friday.
Black Friday origins
The term Black Friday grew popular in the US in the early 1960s when Philadelphia police officers took it upon themselves to bring order to a city riddled with chaos after Thanksgiving celebrations from the day before. This included traffic jams, numerous shoplifting instances, and even some accidents.
However, merchants in the city tried to change the narrative behind the inauspicious day by calling it ‘Big Friday’. The concept of business flowing after a momentary crash the day before during Thanksgiving would cement the term ‘Black Friday’ soon after. This is because special sales on the day after Thanksgiving would put businesses in the red (operating in loss) back in the black (on profit margins).

Black Friday would go on to overtake the big Christmas Eve shopping season in the years to come, quickly being recognized as the single major shopping season in the US, where customers could shop and leverage good deals ahead of the holiday season. The concept would later be carried to many other countries, recently also including India.
Today, Black Friday sales in India are growing more popular every year, with great deals coming to many shopping categories, but especially for consumer technology segments like smartphones, laptops and TVs. The deals are often limited time, which have enthusiasts glued to their computers and phones, trying to grab them before everyone else.
