We’ve almost made it to the end of the year, and it’s been a great one for all kinds of gamers. Whether you like the rumble of your console’s controller or banging on the keys of your gaming rig, 2023 had something for everyone. This year has treated us to some fantastic sequels, return of legendary games, and drool-worthy game expansions. So, without further ado, here’s a list of the best video games of 2023.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is back. This time, gamers get to play as both, Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Some of the new threats they face in this installment, and deadly ones at that, are Kraven the Hunter and his private militia, Venom, and more.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Jedi Knight Cal Kestis returns to fight and survive the Galactic Empire. This installment of Star Wars not only brings forth new foes (and old), but also the ability for gamers to choose between different lightsaber styles and fight stances.

Forza Motorsport

In contrast to the over-the-top Horizon series, Forza Motorsport is a more serious and track-focused racing game. Think Gran Turismo, but for Xbox and PC gamers. Racing game fans will love the realistic looks and simulator-level gameplay.

Mortal Kombat 1

The classic Mortal Kombat moniker makes a comeback with Mortal Kombat 1, which is the 12th installment in this ongoing series. The game is a sequel to 2011’s Mortal Kombat 11 and sees fire god Liu Kang and his fellow warriors take on Titan Shang Tsung’s alliance in the now-iconic combat tournament.

Diablo IV

Diablo IV is the fourth installment in the series, and sees players battle demons in a cold and harsh world simply referred to as “Sanctuary.” The RPG is as dark and hellish as players had hoped for, and there’s much to play beyond the original game with various DLCs already in the works.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 is a third-person horror survival game, wherein you play as one of the protagonists amidst a series of gruesome murders. The twist in the story, however, lies in the fact that both protagonists are trapped in an alternate reality, a part of a novel that Alan Wake wrote 13 years ago.

Starfield

Starfield is an open-world game set across an entire galaxy – the Milky Way. One can explore more than 1,000 fictional and non-fictional planetary systems and build outposts there as well. The player can also interact with and recruit NPCs on these planets, each with their own individual traits and abilities.

Resident Evil 4 remake

Developers Capcom seems quite good at remaking its iconic games, and the Resident Evil 4 remake is as good as it gets. But how do you remake something that was already so good? The developers have refined Resident Evil 4 in ways that make it feel like a modern game and not just a remake.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage

This one’s not only for the history buffs, but also fans of the early Assassin’s Creed installments. With Origins and Valhalla, the series was far from how it all begun, but Mirage takes us back to the good old days. Set in ninth century Baghdad, you play as Basim Ibn Ishaq and follow his journey from a street thief to joining the Hidden Ones.

Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy is set in the famed Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a century prior to the events of the Harry Potter series. You get to create a character from scratch, find a place in Hogwarts, and the story mode let’s you study, play and go on adventures. Essentially, everything a Harry Potter fan would love.

F1 23

Yet another entry on our list for the speed freaks, F1 23 doesn’t only bring with it simple Grand Prix seasons or quick races in real locations the world over. It also marks the return of the story mode from F1 2021 – Braking Point. You take on the role of Aiden Jackson, a driver with the fictional Team Konnersport, looking to make it big on the F1 scene, competing against antagonist Devin Butler.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3, as the name suggests, is the third installment in the series and is based on a playing system similar to Dungeons and Dragons. The game takes place in the fictional world of Forgotten Realms, set in 1492 DR. The objective of the game is simple – tackle an alien parasite invasion and save the city of Baldur’s Gate from catastrophe.

Street Fighter 6

The classic martial arts fighting franchise, Street Fighter, is back and the sixth installment is as modern as it gets. In addition to the iconic characters, Capcom has introduced a host of new ones, and the campaign mode allows you to create your own from scratch. Fight!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

The third installment in Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare series sees the return of Task Force 141, with SAS Captain John Price, and Seargent Soap MacTavish. Needless to say, there’s plenty of missions and over-the-top action pieces as you take on Russian ultranationalist terrorist Vladimir Makarov, who is conspiring to trigger a third world war.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Phantom Liberty is a new expansion pack for Cyberpunk 2077. In this game, the orbital shuttle of the President of the New United States of America is shot down over the district of Night City. Your objective, fellow gamer, is to save them by becoming V, a Cyberpunk for hire. In order to do so, you must infiltrate Dogtown, a city within Night City, ruled by a by a ruthless militia.
