The horror genre has been on fire lately, with hits like Alan Wake 2, the Resident Evil 4 remake, and Amnesia: The Bunker raising the bar on what truly terrifies us.

From haunting visuals and disturbing stories that linger in your mind to high-stakes encounters that leave you gripping your controller, these games bring the perfect mix of fear, mystery, and adrenaline. So, if you’re ready to test your nerves, here are the best horror games to play in 2025.

Top Horror games you need to play in 2025

1. Alan Wake 2

2. Alien: Isolation

3. Dead Space (2023)

4. Silent Hill 2 Remake

5. The Mortuary Assistant

1. Alan Wake 2

If you’re after a game that delivers both mind-bending psychological tension and pure, unrelenting terror, Alan Wake 2 is exactly what you need. This sequel cranks up the horror with a gripping story and survival mechanics that keep you on edge. In Alan Wake 2, you return to the eerie world of best-selling novelist Alan Wake, who’s been trapped in a nightmarish alternate dimension for 13 years.

Desperate to escape, he writes a horror story about FBI Special Agent Saga Anderson, only to have her pulled into his twisted reality. Unlike the first game’s action-adventure approach, Alan Wake 2 fully leans on survival horror, throwing you into a world of unsettling mysteries and terrifying encounters. You’ll switch between playing as Alan and Saga, each offering a different perspective as the story unfolds.

2. Alien: Isolation

Even in 2025, Alien: Isolation remains one of the best survival horror games ever made. Its mix of eerie atmosphere, intense stealth, and immersive world-building will pull you in more than a decade after its 2014 release. Set 15 years after the original Alien film, you step into the shoes of Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, as she explores the abandoned Sevastopol station looking for answers.

The game masterfully captures the suspense and terror of Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic, with a terrifyingly smart alien that never stops hunting you. There’s no blasting your way out of this; stealth is your only option. You’ll have to stay hidden, use a motion tracker, and make the most of limited tools like a flamethrower to survive. And if the alien wasn’t enough, the station is also crawling with hostile humans and androids, making every moment even more intense.

3. Dead Space (2023)

Released in 2023, Dead Space takes the 2008 classic and brings it to life with stunning visuals and a fresh narrative that keeps the terrifying atmosphere of the original. You’re aboard the USG Ishimura, a mining ship now overrun by creepy Necromorphs, playing as engineer Isaac Clarke. What starts as a rescue mission quickly turns into a fight for survival against grotesque monsters, all while Isaac battles his own descent into madness.

The remake stays true to the original story but gives Isaac more depth, with voice acting and emotional moments that his silent counterpart in the original didn’t have. The game also introduces new features like volumetric lighting and dynamic shadows, making the creepy atmosphere of the Ishimura even more intense. Additionally, the updated zero-gravity movement makes the gameplay smoother and more immersive. And with the new “peeling” system, Necromorphs are even more disturbing, showing off a level of detail that adds to the unease.

4. Silent Hill 2 Remake

The 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2 brings the terrifying classic back to life, dropping you in the eerie, fog-covered town of Silent Hill alongside James Sunderland, a grieving widower searching for his deceased wife, Mary. After receiving a cryptic letter from Mary, James is drawn back to the town, where he encounters troubled characters like Angela, Eddie, and the mysterious Maria, who looks oddly like his late wife.

The game still keeps its haunting atmosphere, blending emotional storytelling with psychological horror, exploring James’s psyche as he uncovers disturbing truths about his past. Along with familiar horrors like Pyramid Head, the remake also brings in a modernised third-person camera and smoother combat.

5. The Mortuary Assistant

The Mortuary Assistant is a seriously creepy horror game that throws you into the unsettling world of mortuary work. Set in 1998 at a haunted mortuary in Connecticut, you play Rebecca Owens, a new assistant working under Raymond Delver. However, things take a dark turn when Rebecca gets locked inside during a late-night shift, and her mentor warns her about a demon trying to possess her.

In this first-person game, you’ll be juggling the gruesome job of embalming bodies while also dealing with possessed corpses and performing exorcisms. With plenty of jump scares, hallucinations, and time-sensitive rituals, the game keeps you on your toes as you race to stop a demonic takeover. Every night is different, with new challenges and a story that’s randomly generated, so every playthrough will feel fresh and terrifying.
