No matter which brand of Android phone you use, the primary method for downloading your preferred apps and games is typically through the Google Play Store. However, it is common to encounter situations where certain apps are not available in the store.
This can happen for various reasons, such as regional restrictions, policy violations, or if the apps are niche or experimental and not aimed at a broad audience. Third-party Android app stores can provide access to apps not available in the Play Store.
For instance, AnTuTu, a commonly used app for performing benchmark tests on a smartphone, is unavailable on the Play Store. However, you can use the alternate app store available on your phone to find apps that are missing from the Play Store.

1. Alternate app store on your phone
Phones from brands like Google, Motorola, Lava, Realme, and OnePlus typically come with the Play Store as the default platform for downloading apps and games. However, many other well-known brands, such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Poco, Redmi, Oppo, Vivo, iQOO, Honor, Infinix, and Tecno, provide alternate app stores. For example, Samsung has the Galaxy Store, Xiaomi offers the Mi App Store (also used by Poco and Redmi), Oppo has the Oppo App Market, Vivo provides the V-App Store (also used by iQOO), Honor offers the Honor App Market, and Tecno and Infinix phones feature the Palm Store.
2. Amazon App Store
The Amazon App Store is available on all Amazon Fire devices. Apart from various Android apps, you can find a wide range of Amazon apps.

To use it, you need to download and install the APK file from the Amazon App Store. Next, you need to login to your Amazon account. In terms of user experience, the interface is straightforward, allowing you to find all downloaded apps in the “My apps” tab located in the bottom bar. There is a search bar at the top and a “Categories” tab besides “My apps” for viewing apps across different categories.
3. F-Droid
F-Droid, one of the oldest third-party Android app stores, offers a vast library of apps. It operates on an open-source basis, ensuring that all available apps are open source. The absence of reviews or ratings for the apps means users may come across apps that are unreliable.
Developers will love this platform because it provides access codes for all apps. Volunteers run the app store, relying on donations to sustain this alternative to the Play Store.
4. APK Mirror
APK Mirror does not have a dedicated Android app, but users can access its website to find APKs of almost any app. The “All Developers” tab allows users to see all the apps from each developer and the “All Categories” tab arranges apps in various categories. It ensures that the APKs available on its platform are safe, as it sources the files directly from the Play Store or trusted developers. Furthermore, APK Mirror authenticates cryptographic signatures to ensure that the app remains unaltered since its initial release.
5. Uptodown
Uptodown can either be used by downloading its app store on your phone or by browsing its website. It does not require users to create an account on the platform to access its huge library of apps. It offers a user-friendly interface, allows downloading older app versions, and provides detailed editorial content with screenshots and videos. While it provides a wider range of choices, remember that Uptodown doesn’t maintain the same stringent security standards as Google Play, so it is crucial to exercise caution and research apps thoroughly before downloading.
