Apple’s next base iPhones may finally get high-refresh rate screens

It's about time affordable iPhones get a smoother display

Apple’s next base iPhones may finally get high-refresh rate screens

Apple’s base iPhones and the Pro line up of models have a big distinction when it comes to the display. While the Pro models get a faster 120Hz ProMotion display, the base iPhones still feature 60Hz screens. That may change starting next year.

Apple’s next base iPhone models are reported to feature high refresh rate screens, which may encourage long-standing Android users to switch to iPhones.

Base iPhones may get a high refresh rate display

According to a report from a South Korean publication, Apple may use LTPO technology for all iPhone models from next year. Apple could be using the LTPO panels supplied by Samsung and LG. Thanks to LTPO screens, the base iPhones may finally get a high refresh rate support of up to 120Hz.

Notably, Apple was the first brand to introduce LTPO screens on its iPhones, starting with iPhone 13 Pro models. LTPO or Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide technology allows for a variable refresh rate.

This means an LTPO screen can refresh at as low as 1Hz or 10Hz depending on the content on the screen. Apple introduced LTPO support from 1Hz to 120Hz from iPhone 14 Pro, before that all the Pro models’ screens used to refresh from 10Hz to 120Hz.

If the latest report is to be believed, thanks to the base iPhone’s LTPO screens, a shift from LTPS or Low-Density Polycrystalline Silicon panels, they may get up to 120Hz refresh rate support. However, it is unclear if the base models will feature LTPO panels that refresh at as low as 1Hz or 10Hz.

Featuring an LTPO panel that enables variable refresh rate means, your next base iPhone may get features like an Always-On display for quickly glancing the time and date, a true Standby Mode that doesn’t drain your iPhone’s battery, and possibly better battery life despite the smoother visuals.

In any case, a high refresh rate is welcome and it may finally lure long-standing Android users to switch to iPhones. Also, those who opted for the Pros for the high refresh rate screens can save some cash and opt for the base models next year.
