We have been hearing about a foldable Apple iPhone for a long time now. However, it was unlikely to launch anytime soon. Now, a fresh report suggests that Apple may not launch a foldable iPhone after all, but may instead release a giant foldable iPad. Additionally, the report reveals that it may be able to run macOS apps alongside iPadOS apps.
Intrigued? Here’s everything you need to know about Apple’s first foldable iPad, from its design to its operating system and release timeline.
Apple’s first foldable iPad may run macOS apps
According a report from Bloomberg, Apple may release its first foldable by 2028. Interestingly, it may not be a foldable iPhone, but rather a foldable iPad that unfolds into the size of two iPad Pros. The foldable iPad is said to feature a screen of about 20 inches when unfolded. It appears that Apple is going for a much larger foldable device, making it more practical.
Usually, foldable devices are smaller so they fit in pockets and unfold as tablets. But if the aforesaid side is to be believed, Apple’s foldable will be massive and double up as giant portable screen. Having said that, its folded size may not be as small as the usual foldable phones.
As per the report, Apple wants to avoid any sorts of creases on its foldable device, hence the delay. So far, other manufacturers, including Samsung have tried hiding the crease, but haven’t exactly succeeded. Apple’s foldable iPad, however, may boast a creaseless design.

Only having a large screen may not be the only prowess of the upcoming Apple iPad. The report suggests that by the time Apple launches its foldable iPad, the iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps. Running macOS apps on a foldable iPad will indeed make sense, thanks to its large form factor when unfolded.
However, just like every foldable Apple device report, this one is also yet to be confirmed by Apple. So, by the time an idea of a foldable iPad materialises, there might be many changes. Just something you should keep in mind. As for the release timeline, the report suggests the device may launch by 2028, which is still far away.
So, what do you think about the upcoming foldable iPad? Do you think it will feature a better design than the existing foldables in the market?
