WWDC 2024 kicks off in June: Here’s what to expect from Apple this year

WWDC, short for Worldwide Developer Conference, is one of the biggest tech events every year. Now, we finally have a date as to when WWDC 2024 is set to take place this year. Here’s all you need to know about Apple’s developer-centric event, including what to expect this year.

What is WWDC?

Worldwide Developer Conference usually takes place in the summer months and has been a platform for Apple to announce many of its products and services still in the pipeline. This includes new software updates for iPhones, iPads and more, as well as other updates.

Like clockwork, the event marks the first appearance of the next iOS and macOS updates and give users a good idea of what to expect from their Apple products that year. APIs and other tools are released, allowing app developers to work on tweaking their apps to make the most of the new changes.

These announcements are usually followed by Apple announcing the first beta builds of the new iOS, macOS and iPadOS software. Of course, there’s also more. Last year, Apple announced its first “spatial computer”, the Apple Vision Pro, alongside its software updates.

When is WWDC 2024 taking place?

WWDC 2024 is kicking off on June 10 this year, and will likely follow a similar structure as the previous couple of years. This includes a keynote by CEO Tim Cook at Apple Park, California, followed by other specific sessions. WWDC 2024 will last four days, and conclude on June 14.

What to expect this year at WWDC?

As per multiple reports, one of the highlights at WWDC this year is expected to be iOS 18. Touted as Apple’s biggest update for iPhones in recent years (and possibly ever), iOS 18 is expected to be full of new changes.

This includes a visual revamp that will change the look and feel of the operating system, something we haven’t seen in a while. Apple has also confirmed that a suite of AI-powered features is coming to iPhones and all of these will likely be baked into iOS 18. Lastly, Apple is also expected to bring more granular customisation control to iOS users as well.

WWDC will also see Apple release new updates for iPadOS, macOS and tvOS, as well as new updates for its Vision Pro software – visionOS. While no new hardware like the Vision Pro is expected this year, a couple of months between now and June may be enough for Apple to cook up some new products. Only time will tell.
