Apple rolls out first public betas for iOS 18, macOS and more

Apple has finally rolled out the public betas for iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, iPadOS, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18. The news comes a month after Apple’s unveiled its latest OS versions at WWDC 2024. The latest versions promise several new features, customisable options, as well as significant upgrades for users.

Apple public beta update rolls out: What's there to know?

The iOS 18 update will bring in a major design overhaul for iPhone users. One of the many changes will allow users to make home screen customisations and drop apps freely across without grid restrictions.

Moreover, users will also be able to experiment with tint options for app icons and widgets and can change colours or personalise them if required. The new update even brings in a revamped Control Center and the Photos app, apart from many other features.

Another noteworthy feature is the AI integration with Apple Intelligence. These are however limited to the latest Pro iPhones, but will not be available via the public beta update.

The iPad, on the other hand, mirrors these updates and also gets a dedicated Calculator app putting multiple fan theories and speculations to rest.

Apple’s watchOS 11 public beta brings in several health-focused updates, including tracking ‘rest days’ and a ‘Vitals’ app for users to glance into important metrics. As of macOS Sequoia, users will be able to benefit from the all-new iPhone screen mirroring feature on their Mac devices.

Lastly, the tvOS 18 beta update introduces ‘InSight’, which will give users a sneak peek behind-the-scenes information and trivia about select Apple TV content.

Who is eligible for Apple's public beta update?

Only users enrolled in Apple’s beta program can make the most of the public beta rollout. Depending on the device you’re using, launch the Settings app and navigate to General to find Software Update. Within this, you will find an option titled Beta Updates and Developer’s Beta. Once you’ve switched this on, you will automatically be able to enjoy Apple’s beta rollouts.

That said, it is crucial to understand beta updates come with their own set of risks and it is always advisable to wait for a stable version. Apart from that, while every other Apple device can be rolled back to its previous OS version, the Apple Watch does not allow beta users to do so. It is best to keep these aspects in mind before enrolling yourself on Apple’s Developer’s Beta program.
