Those who are not buying a new iPhone this year, may now have another reason to hold on to their decision about 12 months from now. Why? Because one key feature that’s only been seen on the Pro iPhones so far, is expected to finally come to the base iPhones.
As per a fresh report, the next base iPhone models will get a big display upgrade. The upgrade will make the base iPhones’ screens as smooth as the Pro models. Here’s all we know so far.
Next base iPhones to get a big display upgrade
According to Display Supply Chain Consultants’ (DSCC) Ross Young, the next base iPhone models will come with better screens, making them almost in-line with the Pro models. We are expected to see two base iPhone models next year and both of them are tipped to come with 120Hz ProMotion screens for smoother scrolling.

Base iPhones so far, like this year’s Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, have had 60Hz screens. So, the 120Hz upgrade will be a welcome change. With 120Hz support, the next base iPhones may also get LTPO panel, as per Young, allowing these screens to refresh at as low as 10Hz or 1Hz. Note that the Pro models now, like the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, have a screen that drops to 1Hz.
The change may even enable other features like a steady Standby Mode, something only Pro iPhones have had.
Having LTPO screen will also help with the battery, but do not expect any big real-life improvements, as instead of 60Hz, base iPhones will refresh at 120Hz. Although, we can still expect a decent battery life from the Plus model.
There’s scarce information about 2025’s lineup of iPhones, but going by the yearly pattern, Apple should unveil the iPhone 16 successors by September-October 2025. Until then, stay tuned on Unboxed by Croma for more updates on the next iPhones.
