It’s been 15 years since Apple launched its first Magic Mouse, the default Apple accessory for anything running on macOS, that blends Apple’s minimal design with seamless functionality. However, while other products by the tech giant have received several design updates in the years since, the Magic Mouse hasn’t, except a few small tweaks.
These include a switch from external batteries to rechargeable internal ones, and later, a switch from Apple’s Lightning port to the Type-C one. On the surface, however, the mouse looks and feels the same. That is about to change.
A new report by Apple analyst Mark Gurman, who has predicted several Apple products and features ahead of launch, suggests the Magic Mouse is getting a touch of magic soon. This not only includes a new top-to-bottom redesign, but also fixes for age-old issues.
Here are all the changes we expect from the redesign.
A redesigned charging port
One of the main complaints with the Magic Mouse has been the charging port. Since the switch to internal batteries, the Magic Mouse has had its charging port on the bottom. This means the device quite literally needs to be put on its sides while it charges, making it unusable during this period.
While this may not be a bother for MacBook users, who can switch back to their trackpads for a while, it is a complete full stop for Mac, Mac Studio and Mac mini users, who (usually) have no other pointing device to use in the meantime. This could be fixed by offering a charging port on the front or back (literally anywhere but the bottom), or switching back to replaceable batteries.

The Magic Mouse is instantly recognisable thanks to its sleek design and minimal aesthetics, but a lot of users who have spent enough time with one every day will tell you that it isn’t particularly a comfortable design when you have long hours of precision pointing ahead of you.
With a complete redesign, the new Magic Mouse may get a taller, wider body with grooves for the fingers or a similar implementation. This has been seen on a number of gaming and non-gaming mice in recent years, and a popular example would be the Logitech MX series mice, particularly the MX Master 3S.
More buttons or gestures
Unlike conventional mice, the Apple Magic Mouse works with a single button, together with support for several gestures. Everything from a Single Click and Right Click to a page-wide scroll or Apple’s Mission Control feature can be pulled up using a combination of one and two-finger gestures from the Magic Mouse. However, that may not be enough.

A lot of newer professional-grade mice have seen the addition of auxiliary buttons, on the top or on the side, most of which can be customised further for the controls or macros you use the most in your programmes and tools. The Magic Mouse too could benefit from a few more buttons, which should no doubt, be easier to use once you get the hang of them.
Those are the changes we expect from the new Apple Magic Mouse. Apple is yet to announce any new details about the product or when we can expect it, but we think expecting the product by the end of 2025 shouldn’t be a stretch.
