Apple Magic Mouse: Common issues and their fixes

If you’re having trouble with your Apple Magic Mouse like erratic cursor movement, unresponsive clicks, or connection issues, then you might not be alone. We often take the Magic Mouse for granted until it suddenly stops working, the cursor becomes jerky, or it zooms unpredictably across the screen.

These problems can be incredibly frustrating and can disrupt your workflow. But the good news is you can usually fix these glitches quite easily. Here’s how to get your Magic Mouse back in action.

Common Apple Magic Mouse issues and their fixes

There could be several reasons why your Apple mouse might not be working with your iMac, MacBook, or iPad.

It might be having connection issues, and struggling to sync via Bluetooth or another wireless method. Tracking or scrolling problems can also be an issue—maybe the cursor isn’t moving right or scrolling is acting up. Battery or power issues might cause the mouse to not turn on or behave erratically. Here’s how you can troubleshoot these common problems and fix your Apple Magic Mouse.

How to fix an Apple Magic Mouse not able to connect to your macOS device

If your Magic Mouse does not connect to your Mac, it could be a Bluetooth or a sync issue. This can be particularly annoying when you’re trying to get work done. Here’s how to troubleshoot it:

1. First, check that Bluetooth is turned on by heading to System Settings > Bluetooth. Make sure the toggle is switched on.

2. Turn off your Magic Mouse using the switch at the bottom (the green light should be off). Then, restart your Mac by clicking the Apple menu and selecting Restart.

3. After your Mac restarts, turn your Magic Mouse back on (the green light should be visible). This means it’s ready to reconnect.

4. Now, go back to System Settings > Bluetooth and find your Magic Mouse in the list of devices. Click the Connect button next to your Magic Mouse to pair it up again. Your mouse should now be ready to go.

If your Apple mouse still isn’t working, check for a macOS update under System Settings > General > Software Update. Installing any available updates can often fix many different issues.

How to fix an Apple Magic Mouse being unable to scroll properly

If your Apple mouse is not scrolling smoothly or you’re having tracking issues, try the following:

1. Start by cleaning the surface of your mouse lightly with a cloth moistened with water to remove any dirt or debris.

2. Now, click the Apple menu, choose System Settings > Accessibility, then click Pointer Control and Mouse Options. Adjust the Scroll Speed slider toward the middle if it’s all the way to the left.

3. Also, check the mouse’s battery level by selecting the Bluetooth icon from the top menu and choosing your mouse from the list. If it’s low, replace the batteries or recharge the mouse if it has a built-in battery. For the Magic Mouse 2, allow it to charge for at least 15 minutes before reconnecting.

How to fix an Apple Magic Mouse that won't turn on

If your mouse won’t turn on, it might be a simple power issue. Restarting the mouse can sometimes resolve the issue. Slide the switch on the bottom of your mouse to turn it off (the green light should be off), then slide it back to turn it on (the green light should be visible). Try recharging it or replacing the batteries if that doesn’t work.

How to fix an Apple Magic Mouse not charging

Apple Magic Mouse not charging is another common issue that can be caused by several factors. Start by checking your charging source to make sure the power outlet is on and that the cable is securely connected. If needed, try a different outlet or USB port. Next, inspect your mouse, charging cable, and port for any signs of damage, as physical issues can impact charging. Dust and debris in the charging port can also prevent proper charging, so use a toothpick or Q-tip to gently clean it out.

If none of the above steps resolves the problem, it’s best to visit an Apple retail store or repair centre and get the Apple Magic Mouse checked by professional technicians.
