Apple Intelligence rolls out for iOS 18.1 beta users; here’s how to use it

At WWDC 2024, Apple announced its take on AI — Apple Intelligence — and users have been waiting for it to drop ever since. However, not long after rolling out the iOS 18 beta to the public, the brand has now announced the very first version of Apple Intelligence for its users. The update will bring a wide range of on-device features, and Apple has also made it available to other devices, such as Macs and iPads. Here’s everything you need to know:

How to get the Apple Intelligence update on iPhone and other devices

You will be able to make the most of Apple Intelligence only if your iPhone supports the feature, and runs the public beta build. As of now, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users on the beta update can get the AI features.

Once you have the beta update ready to download, ensure you have ample storage and a backup of your iPhone, Mac or iPad in place. Next, look for an iOS 18.1 beta update within the General Settings > Software Update tab on your iPhone. When the update is successfully installed, navigate to Settings again, and tap the new ‘Apple Intelligence & Siri’ button (located below Accessibility).

What Apple Intelligence features are available for use?

Although made available to its users, Apple still hasn’t disclosed the full list of Apple Intelligence features. Several users, however, have reported only having access to a few of these features. The preview version will allow users to enjoy Siri with the reimagined ‘glow’. Apart from this, the virtual assistant will also be able to understand complex voice commands. This would also include the ability to understand sentences when the speaker stumbles over their words.

Siri can also now troubleshoot questions about Apple products. If that’s not all, users will be able to perform better photo searches and get AI-generated summaries for Mail, Messages, and voicemail transcriptions.

Among the features that haven’t been rolled out are image generation and emoji generation. Apart from that Apple Intelligence also can’t perform automated photos clean up, as demonstrated at the keynote address. Apple also hasn’t included other improvements for Siri, including its ability to use personal information or ability to take actions within an app.

While these features are not available with the AI preview yet, Apple says they will be rolled out over the next year. For more updates and developments, don’t forget to subscribe to Unboxed by Croma.
