It’s been about two weeks since iOS 17.3 Apple dropped the iOS 17.3 update for all compatible iPhones. The update brought several exciting features with it, including Stolen Device Protection and Collaborative Playlists on Apple Music.
Now, however, Apple is already rumoured to be working on a new, surprise update for iPhones – iOS 17.3.1. Here’s all you need to know.
iOS 17.3.1: What we know so far
iOS 17.3.1 isn’t expected to bring any major or even small new features. Instead, it may feature several bug fixes for new features that have been recently introduced on iPhones, starting with iOS 17, all the way up to iOS 17.3. Alternatively, it could also pack new security patches.
A possible bug fix on iOS 17.3.1 could be for the Stolen Device Protection feature. The feature, for the unaware, ensures extra security protections for your iPhone, and your Apple ID, when you’re in an unfamiliar location. What it does is – it adds your Face ID as a mandatory requirement to change your Apple ID password, in case your iPhone is stolen. This ensures whoever has your phone cannot lock you out of your Apple ID or access the data on the device.

Now, there have been complaints that you can’t specify the locations that are familiar or unfamiliar to you. While the update may still not allow you to do that, you may just be able to activate the feature no matter where you are – familiar or unfamiliar.
iOS 17.3.1: When could it launch?
Now, Apple has been releasing surprise updates ending in version number xx.3.1 in February for the past two years. It released iOS 16.3.1 on February 13, 2023, and iOS 15.3.1 on February 10, 2022. If this timeline is anything to go by, Apple may release the iOS 17.3.1 anytime in the coming week.

Now, Apple has already confirmed that it will release the iOS 17.4 update in March this year. The update, unlike iOS 17.3.1, is expected to bring some big changes with it. This includes third-party app store support for users in the EU, Apple Podcasts transcripts, SharePlay support for the Apple HomePod, new emojis, and more.
