Future Apple AirPods could come with built-in cameras

Apple may have a serious upgrade in spatial audio experiences in store for you

Future Apple AirPods could come with built-in cameras

Apple’s AirPods are in their third generation, while the AirPods Pro are in their second generation. While the audio experiences have continued to improve with each generation, the overall design has largely remained the same.

But, if a new report is to be believed, future AirPods could be coming with drastic changes. A pair of AirPods with built-in cameras? Turns out it could be a possibility. Intrigued? Read on.

AirPods with built-in cameras: What they could do for you

As per analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is looking to release new AirPods with built-in camera modules by 2026. The camera unit on the AirPods is likely to be an infrared camera, similar to the one used for the Face ID module on the iPhones and iPads.

However, Apple’s plans for the camera-equipped AirPods are not exactly similar to the Face ID modules. Instead, the iPhone maker plans to integrate them with the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset, as well as future generations of the same.

How? Well, the cameras are reportedly meant to enhance the spatial audio experience for users, within Apple’s spatial computing ecosystem. To simplify this, Kuo mentions an example.

While wearing the Apple Vision Pro and the new, yet unnamed AirPods together, if a user turns their head in a particular direction, the sound source can be emphasised in that direction, to enhance one’s listening experience.

The report also goes on to add how the IR camera on the AirPods could also potentially sense in-air gesture controls, to enhance the user experience as well.

Apple's future plans for wearable devices

Kuo’s report falls in line with an earlier Bloomberg report which mentioned how AirPods with cameras are just one of the ways Apple is looking to enhance its wearable product portfolio.

The company is also said to looking at developing smart glasses similar to the Ray-Ban Meta, as well as a smart ring similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Ring. These products could potentially be game-changers, particularly appealing to those looking for lighter and more compact alternatives to the Apple Vision Pro headset and the Apple Watch respectively.

Bear in mind though. Just when we will get to see the aforementioned devices remains unknown for now, as there has been no official confirmation from the company regarding them. Hopefully though, we get to hear something soon.
