7 absurd app features we wish were true

From keeping in touch with our loved ones to reminding you to drink water, these days, there is an app for everything. But what if these apps we love had some bizarre features that would make our lives a tad more interesting?

Soren Iverson, an LA-based product designer, has been reimagining popular apps with some bizarre (or, in his words, unhinged) features on X (formerly Twitter). Some of these ideas are straight out of our nightmares, like a feature that automatically fires an employee who doesn’t respond to a Slack message on time. However, some of his ideas, though a bit absurd, would make our lives more convenient and exciting.

1) Get a second opinion on your Tinder requests

Don’t fall for the carefully selected display pictures. Get a first-hand review on how great or not-so-great your potential match is. If not a life partner, you might get yourself a new friend!

2) See how someone has saved your contact

There’s something very personal about how someone saves your contact details on their smartphone. Are you the “work colleague😖” or “❤️😉”? If nothing else, it can be a great conversation starter!

3) Steal someone's food delivery

Forgot to order your lunch on time, and now your stomach is rumbling louder than a lion’s roar? Just check the orders about to be delivered in your vicinity and swoop in like a food ninja to claim your stake steak!

4) Message other drivers around you

No more rolling down the window to exchange a few choice words with the driver who cut lanes. Simply drop them a message and continue going your own way. And imagine if an update to this feature included leaving voice notes!

5) Avoid running into people you know

If we were in a magical world, we could have just used our invisibility cloak and snuck past the people we know. This feature is almost as good as it will help you avoid those awkward conversations after accidental run-ins.

6) Vote to cancel a meeting

We’ve all been in at least one meeting, which could have been a two-line email. So the next time you get an invite for such a meeting, vote to cancel it. If enough people feel the same as you do, you’ve got some more time for that afternoon nap!

7) Never get a red signal again

If there were a feature that made you feel like a god, it would be this. Don’t worry about roadblocks at intersections or running into red lights – you can be the queen or king of the road.

Of course, most of these features are impossible with current technology. And even if they weren’t, they would cause more chaos than good. But isn’t it fun to dream of a life where these things were possible?
