The new dedicated camera control button was one of the most discussed features when Apple launched its flagship iPhone 16 series in September. This button was considered a convenient addition to the iPhone that provided access to camera tools even when the phone was locked.
Located on the side of the device, this button also serves as a shutter button to capture photos and videos with a single tap making it very easy for users to capture moments. However, as users continue to explore the Camera Control, a variety of features are brought to light. Let’s find out what the camera control button on the iPhone 16 Pro can do.
5 camera control features you must try
One of the standout features, the camera control button can be used for customisability. It can transform the button into a multifaceted tool that can prioritise the user’s preferences. The button can be configured to suit your utility like opening your favourite photography apps. It allows users to go through different camera tools to capture the best possible images and videos without changing the frame.

This innovative button captures a photo with a single press and records a video when held down. For more precise control, a half-press provides haptic feedback. It means the last used camera function is recalled. A double half press allows the user to access all camera tools.
Swiping forward and backward on the button provides the users with the ability to explore and switch between different modes and tools. This ensures that the user can peruse through the menu and select tools as per their requirement. Here are a few features that you must try.
1. Enhancing image brightness
The iPhone 16 Pro can help users capture clear visuals with granular control over image brightness. Users can brighten or darken the scene by increasing or decreasing the exposure. This can be achieved through exposure settings that can tweak the lighting in photos.
2. Depth Effects
Apple iPhone users can choose from several depth effects, and adjust the aperture and background blur features. These can increase or decrease the blurring of your background for more focus on the subject, while other options like Natural Light, Studio Light, High Key Light Mono and Stage Light Mono help your image take up different looks.
3. Controlling Zoom
In order to capture the best image quality, users can choose between optical and digital zoom. Camera Control lets you effectively go through the zoom wheel at the flick of a finger, letting you quickly go from the ultrawide viewfinder to a zoomed in 5x telephoto view.
4. Tone adjustment
Creative possibilities can be further expanded by using image tone adjustments and applying photographic styles. It can enhance images in the form of shades like vibrant, cozy, and more. It can also go from stark black to white styles. The tone can be used make shadows richer, or to brighten up the midtones. With camera control, you can do all of this in real-time, without leaving the viewfinder.
5. Macro mode
With 48MP macro photography, the iPhone 16 Pro can provide sharper and more detailed images. When the preview looks perfect, users can simply click the Camera Control making it easy to capture moments without stepping forward or backward to adjust the shot.
Future integration with Apple Intelligence is said to enhance the functionality of the Camera Control switch. Based on the announcement made at the Apple event 2024, AI will provide object and place recognition which will further enhance the button’s functionality. However, users are still waiting for iOS 18.1 to be rolled out to see how AI is incorporated into the new iPhone 16 series and older eligible models.
