YouTube Shorts are now ‘Taller’; supports 3-minute long videos

Back in September 2020, when YouTube first started experimenting with vertical videos, they were tested to be up to 30 seconds long. With time, YouTube realised its short format videos were a little too short, and video length was pushed to 60 seconds, which is where are are at right now.

Now, YouTube Shorts are about to be even longer.

YouTube Shorts: Time limit extended

YouTube has taken it upon itself to provide an alternative to TikTok by adding similar features to encourage its creator base to create short-form content. After users highly requested it, YouTube decided to elongate the time limit for creating videos on the platform. While TikTok currently allows videos that can go up to 10 minutes, YouTube has increased the limit to three minutes.

YouTube also announced a template feature that will permit creators to reuse the format of other Shorts. The company will also allow creators to be able to match their clips to trending sounds pulled from other videos. YouTube‘s template option will be accessible via the Remix button on videos.

Both these features make it faster and easier to create content while keeping up with trends. In a way, creators can clone another user’s editing choices to create new videos. However, over time the content may start looking the same.

When will the new changes go live?

These new changes will go live from October 15. However, the videos uploaded before it will remain as it is. The users will get an option to move their taller or square videos that are up to 180 seconds and will be eligible for being recommended as YouTube Shorts. The recommendation section will also be improved with time as there will be newer and longer videos available.

YouTube has also acknowledged the fact that their might be users who may not be interested in watching the shorter videos on their smartphones. For these users, YouTube will add a “show fewer Shorts’ option that can temporarily result in showcasing fewer Shorts videos in that user’s feed.
