WhatsApp is bringing about both functional as well as design changes for its smartphone and web apps. The instant messaging platform recently introduced themed chat bubbles, AR call effects and even AI-based stickers that were primarily aimed at improving user experience.
But it seems as though there is more up WhatsApp’s sleeve, as the Meta-owned company just introduced a low-light video calling mode for its users. Here’s how to use the app’s newest feature, which is added to improve video quality in dim-lit settings.
What is WhatsApp low-light video calling feature?
WhatsApp’s low-light video calling mode can enhance video calls in low light conditions. The feature will automatically improve the lighting in a video and provide better illumination to a face.

It will also reduce the graininess that usually comes with video quality in the dark. This means if you’re on a poorly lit road next time, you don’t have to worry about your family members not being able to see you clearly on call.
How to enable low-light video calling mode on WhatsApp
If you’re wondering how to enable the low light mode for your WhatsApp video calls, there are a few simple steps you can follow. Check them out here:
Step 1: Launch WhatsApp on your device
Step 2: Select a contact of your choice and place a video call
Step 3: Ensure your screen is set to a full-screen mode
Step 4: You will see a ‘Bulb’ icon on the bottom of your screen; tap on it
Step 5: With this, your video should be better illuminated for your contact
Step 6: To disable, follow the same steps and tap on the Bulb icon
Who can make the most of the low-light video calling mode on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp has begun rolling out the low light mode for both Android and iOS smartphone users. That said, the feature is still not available for WhatsApp’s web app yet.
It is also crucial to note that the low light mode will have to be manually switched on for individual video calls and users will not have the option to be switched on permanently. WhatsApp also seems to have a bunch of other features in its pipeline that it seems to be testing.
