What is VoWiFi?

Ever been stuck in a basement in a mall, or perhaps at a resort in the hills, unable to make calls because of a poor cellular network? Well, to help with situations just like those, your phones have VoWiFi, or Voice over WiFi technology in-built. Here’s all you need to know about it.

VoWiFi: What it is and how it works

VoWiFi is a technology that allows you to make phone calls using a WiFi connection, rather than using a traditional mobile cellular network.

Bear in mind, we’re not talking about WhatsApp calls. These are normal calls made through the normal phone app on your smartphone, and you will be charged for the calls the same way by your operator, as you would otherwise.

VoWiFi, in essence , is a fail-safe for your phone if your regular signal is weak, or practically non-existent.  When your phone uses a VoWiFi network, it connects to the internet using a WiFi network such as the one in your home, or a public hotspot.

This feature enables you to make as well as receive calls easily, and ensures you don’t have to rely on a regular mobile network, should you happen to be in an area with poor signal. What’s more, you make these calls using your normal phone number, and ensure you don’t have to depend on third party calling apps such as WhatsApp, Teams or Skype should you not want to do so.

VoWiFi: Things to keep in mind

Now, most modern smartphones have VoWiFi as an in-built feature. However, it is always a good idea to check if your phone is compatible with the same, as well as whether your network service provider supports it or not. Lastly, it is extremely important to remember that VoWiFi also relies on a stable internet connection, the way regular calling does on a stable cellular network. Therefore, a weak Wi-Fi signal may cause you to be unable to use the feature for calling.
