From earphones to home appliances, Artificial Intelligence is everywhere these days and tech companies are eager to integrate AI into every aspect of our lives. The good old TVs are no exception, with major brands like Samsung and LG already rolling out their latest “AI TVs” in the country.
But before you rush out and upgrade, it’s important to understand what AI really means for your TV experience. So, to help you better understand what the fuss is all about, here’s an easy explanation on what exactly AI TVs are and the features they bring to the table.
What is an AI TV?
AI TVs are mostly a marketing gimmick for “smarter” smart TVs. Put simply, AI TVs are smart TVs but with added AI-enabled features that take advantage of more processing power and machine learning to enhance your overall viewing experience. Features like upscaling content or suggesting shows based on your habits are just some advantages of AI TV.

AI also improves functionalities like voice controls and personalised recommendations, as the TV’s processor gradually learns from the user’s interactions. This translates to a better overall user experience for the viewer, making things more intuitive.
Features of an AI TV
Given that it’s early days for AI TVs, brands are still experimenting with a lot of things, so the list of features isn’t that long or revolutionary. However, you can expect some major improvements like better video and audio quality, sharper images and colour as well as a more personalised viewing experience. Here are some features you can currently expect to find in most AI TVs on the market.
1. AI image upscaling:
Image upscaling is a neat little trick that TV manufacturers have been using to improve lower-resolution content, like DVDs and Blu-rays, so they fit larger screens without losing quality. AI TVs will take this a step further, using machine learning and AI algorithms to analyse and enhance each frame, improving clarity, sharpness, and colour depth to ensure older content looks better than ever on modern HDR screens.

Major TV brands are already using AI algorithms to improve the content you watch. For example, Samsung is expected to launch the AI Motion Enhancer Pro feature, which will detect the type of ball being used in any sport and recreate its motion on a frame-by-frame basis to eliminate motion blur. Meanwhile, LG recently announced a TV that will use AI to provide the exact colours on the screen as intended by movie or TV series directors, offering even more colour accuracy than before.
2. Enhanced sound quality:
If you’ve ever struggled to hear dialogue over loud music or background noise, then AI TVs might be able to fix it. Using machine learning, these TVs will process and enhance audio tracks for better clarity and a more immersive surround sound experience. Basically, the AI isolates different sound elements, making voices stand out and improving overall audio quality.
3. Smarter voice control:
Similar to Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant in current smart TVs, voice assistance will get a major makeover in AI TVs. These might soon get AI-powered voice controls that let you change the channel, adjust the volume, or find a movie just by talking.

4. AI-powered content recommendations:
There would have been times when you endlessly scrolled for something to watch but didn’t find anything worthwhile. AI will soon be able to help with that! AI-powered smart TVs will be able to learn your preferences and suggest personalised content recommendations right on your TV’s homepage. The more you watch, the more the AI refines your experience, offering a customised entertainment experience without the frustration of endless scrolling.
