Whenever buying an air conditioner, or maybe trying to understand how it works, have you ever come across the term thermostat? If yes, ever wondered what it does? Read on to find out.
What does a thermostat do?
A thermostat is an instrument within yout AC, which is used to maintain your desired temperature by regulating and controlling the system. The thermostat is a tool that senses the temperature of the surrounding and compares it with the preset temperature on the AC.

It then detects any discrepancies between the actual and desired temperature, which in turn either slows down or boosts the operation of the air AC to reach the latter.
Types of thermostats
Modern thermostats are of many types- including pre-programmable and smart thermostats. Programmable thermostats enable users to set self-scheduled temperature schedules upon which the AC system operates, depending on the time of the day or the day of the week.
Unlike the conventional models, smart thermostats take things a step further. They can be controlled remotely or automated, using smartphone apps or other smart home devices.
How thermostats also ensure energy efficiency
The function of the thermostat in an AC is not only about maintaining a cool and comfortable environment. It also ensures energy efficiency. Through ensuring the AC doesn’t work overtime, trying to cool or heat a room when not required, it works to ensure that the AC only works when needed. This reduces energy consumption and results in lower utility costs. And not to mention, it is kinder to the environment as well.
A thermostat may be thought of as the brain that controls an AC’s behaviour, planning the cooling process according to the user’s preferences and minimising energy waste.
