In our busy lives, nothing is scarier than our washing machine breaking down. No matter if you own a top load or a front load washing machine, all machines have their bad days. Sometimes, a washing machine shows an error code, doesn’t turn on, or simply doesn’t initiate the wash cycle.
If you find yourself staring at a washing machine that refuses to do its job, fear not. Try out these simple steps to troubleshoot and fix your washing machine.
How to fix a washing machine that's not working
Check out the steps below to troubleshoot a washer that’s not working efficiently.
- Check the power cord
- Inspect the water source
- Look for the drain hose
- Check out the agitator
- Reset the machine
1. Check the power cord
To begin with, if the machine is refusing to turn on, check the power supply of the washing machine. Ensure the plug is properly connected to the socket and the circuit breaker is not tripped. If the circuit breaker is tripped, reset the breaker to operate your machine once again.
2. Inspect the water source
If your wash drum is not filling appropriately, check the water hoses to ensure there’s no blockage. To fix this problem, turn the tap off and clean the hose with a wire hanger or a drain snake. But, if water is flowing through the hose but not filling the drum, then there’s an issue with the water valve. Open the valve and clean the valve filter. Check the valve connectivity well while you are plugging it back.
3. Look for the drain hose
If your machine turns on but refuses to spin, it’s probably because it’s unable to drain the water properly. The drainpipe is the source of foam, soap, and leftover dryer lint. Look for the drain hose that might have got clogged with debris and dirt. In case of a blockage, clean it with a wire hanger or a drain snake.
4. Check out the agitator
If you peek into the centre of the wash basket, you will find a tall spindle, which is known as the agitator. This agitator twists and rubs back and forth to bring out the dirt from the clothes. If this agitator is the victim of daily wear and tear, your machine might not function properly. Check whether it’s damaged, and if it is, consider replacing it with a skilled professional.

If the agitator is not damaged and working in good condition, check the washing machine belt of the motor. If it’s a belt-driven motor, and the belt has fallen loose or damaged, it prevents the agitator from functioning properly.
5. Reset the machine
Considering all these steps, the last resort is to reset the washing machine. When you reset a washing machine, all the error codes automatically get cleared from its memory.
To reset your machine, unplug the device from its wall outlet and re-replug the machine after a minute. Switch on the machine, and after about 12 seconds, open and close the washing machine door several times. Wondering why? By doing this, you reset all the components of your machine.
Hope your machine gives brighter and cleaner results after trying out these above methods. If your washer’s condition doesn’t improve, get in touch with a ZipCare professional by Croma. Check out the ZipCare Maintain and ZipCare Protect plans to keep your washing machine running like a breeze.
