Washing machine not draining? Here’s how to fix it

There can be times when your washing machine might not be draining properly, leaving you with damp laundry and a headache. Don’t panic! In most cases, there’s a simple fix you can try yourself before calling in a repair person. But first, let’s understand what a clogged drain actually means.

If your washing machine isn’t draining properly, it means it’s holding onto the rinse water after the cycle finishes. This can make your clothes heavy and wet, cause bad smells, and even lead to mould if left unaddressed. Here’s a quick and easy way to fix a washing machine that’s not draining, so you can get back to having clean, fresh-smelling laundry.

How to fix a washing machine that's not draining

A washing machine not draining can be frustrating, but it’s often a problem you can fix yourself with some basic troubleshooting. Before we get started, remember to always unplug the washing machine before performing any maintenance.

Also, since every washing machine model is different, it is recommended to refer to your user manual for specific instructions on how to access the drain hose, filter, and any other relevant parts. With that out of the way, here’s a step-by-step guide to get your washing machine back in action:

1. Check the drain hose

2. Drain the remaining water

3. Clean the drain pump filter

4. Check for deeper clogs

5. Reset the washing machine

1. Check the drain hose

First, start by checking the drain hose. You can find it at the back of your washing machine. Inspect the hose for any kinks or bends that might be stopping the water from flowing properly and straighten them out. If needed, disconnect the hose from the machine (check your manual if you’re not sure how) and see if there are any clogs. Sometimes, things like coins, buttons, or other debris can get stuck in the hose and block the water flow. Clear any blockages you find to ensure proper drainage.

2. Drain the remaining water

Next, drain the remaining water from the washing machine manually. Most machines have a built-in drain hose (typically a small hose with a cap or plug) designed for manual draining. Put a shallow pan or bucket underneath the hose to catch the water. Take off the cap or loosen the clamp to let the water out and make sure it drains all the way.

3. Clean the drain pump filter

Then, proceed to clean the drain pump filter. The drain pump filter traps debris that could be preventing proper drainage and is usually situated near the bottom front of the washer. Place a towel or shallow pan beneath the filter to catch any water that may spill out. Open the compartment, remove the filter, and clean it thoroughly with warm water. Remove any debris or dirt that has accumulated in the filter.

4. Check for deeper clogs

If the issue still persists, check for deeper clogs in the drain system. Sometimes, clogs can be further down the drain system, needing more advanced fixes. One thing to try is pouring a cup of white vinegar down the drain hose outlet, where it connects to the standpipe.

This can help loosen up any soap scum that might be causing the clog. Be careful and avoid using strong chemicals or drain cleaners, as they can damage your washing machine.

5. Reset the washing machine

Finally, if none of the earlier steps solve the issue, try resetting the washing machine. Sometimes, electronic glitches can mess with the drainage. To reset your washing machine, simply unplug it from the power outlet for at least a minute. Then, plug it back in and try running a quick rinse and spin cycle to see if that clears up the drainage issue.

However, if none of these steps resolve the issue, there might be a problem with the drain pump itself or other internal components. It’s best to consult a qualified technician at this point and get the whole thing checked.
