A personal assistant for calls, that sounds like you

Truecaller now lets you use your own AI voice to take calls for you

Truecaller is partnering with Microsoft Azure AI Speech to bring a cool new feature to its app. Users can now use the Truecaller app on their smartphones to set up an AI voice that can take calls on their behalf.

The feature will allow you to feed in samples of your voice to create a digital voice clone, which can then answer calls and ask the other person for details like their identity and the urgency of the call – all in your voice.

The feature is an addition to the Assistant feature that Truecaller already launched last year. Assistant can automatically answer calls, filter them, take messages and respond on your behalf to save time for both you and the caller. Now it can do all that in your own voice, or to be precise, a digital version of it.

How to enable AI voice in Truecaller Assistant

To enable the cool ne feature, you will need to have Truecaller installed and set up on your phone. Assuming you’ve already done that, you can then head to the Assistant settings under Settings. You should now find a new option to add your own voice in here, along with a list of preset voices like Mathew and Debra.

The recording bit, is very similar to how the AI voice feature works in newer iPhones like the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series. You can check out Truecaller’s short video on how the feature works below.

The aim here is to use the AI voice to replace your own pre-recorded voicemails. The AI voice may not sound as natural as you do, but it will offer a more dynamic and interactive experience for a caller, compared to a static voice message that remains the same no matter who you’re getting a call from.

Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech, the tech behind the feature, was announced earlier this week during the Microsoft Build developer conference, alongside the new Surface laptops and Copilot+ PCs.

To make the tech secure, Microsoft has also said that voices created with Azure AI Speech will feature a digital watermark, and will be only available in a limited functionality for use cases like voice assistants.
