Tired of dropped calls? Here are five reasons why you should enable Wi-Fi calling on your smartphone

Ever been on an important call only to have the network bail on you mid-sentence? Yep, been there. What’s surprising is that many smartphone users still don’t know there’s a super simple fix – Wi-Fi calling (also known as VoWiFi or Voice over Wi-Fi).

It takes just a few taps to enable and brings a host of benefits including fewer dropped calls, crystal-clear voice quality, and even better battery life. Still not convinced? Here are five reasons why we swear by Wi-Fi calling (and why you probably should too).

A lifesaver in low-signal areas

The biggest perk? You can make and receive calls even in areas with poor cellular coverage, as long as there’s a solid Wi-Fi connection. Say your office has spotty mobile reception but blazing-fast 1Gbps Wi-Fi. With Wi-Fi calling enabled, you won’t need to run to the terrace or balcony just to take a call. As long as your Wi-Fi is strong, your network stays uninterrupted.

Better voice clarity

Even on 4G or 5G, call quality can take a hit, especially with weak signals or network congestion. Issues like reduced bandwidth, packet loss, and jitter can cause robotic voices, audio lag, and dropped words. Wi-Fi calling, on the other hand, delivers noticeably better voice quality, provided your Wi-Fi connection is stronger than your mobile network. So, if you’re on your home Wi-Fi where not many devices are connected, you will notice that the audio quality on calls is usually superior on Wi-Fi.

Fewer dropped calls

Wi-Fi calling significantly reduces the chances of call drops by tapping into a stable internet connection instead of relying solely on cellular towers. In areas where mobile signals fluctuate, like inside buildings, basements, or rural zones, calls placed over Wi-Fi remain steady as long as the internet connection is strong. This consistent connectivity helps ensure your calls don’t suddenly cut out.

Avoiding international calling fees

One of the biggest perks of Wi-Fi calling is the ability to avoid hefty international roaming charges. When you’re abroad and connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can make and receive calls to and from your home country without using international roaming. Your call is routed through the internet instead of a foreign mobile network, helping you stay connected without burning a hole in your wallet. It’s a game-changer for frequent travelers and remote workers alike. However, make sure your phone is using Wi-Fi calling, else you will be charged hefty international roaming fees.

Conserves battery life

Wi-Fi calling can also help extend your phone’s battery life. When you’re in an area with poor cellular reception, your phone works overtime trying to latch onto a stable signal, draining the battery faster. By switching to Wi-Fi calling, your device uses less power to maintain a connection, especially in signal-dead zones. The result? Longer battery life and fewer mid-day charges.

How to enable Wi-Fi calling on your phone

Wi-Fi calling is turned off by default on smartphones (a shame, really). To enable it, head to Settings > Apps > Phone and turn on ‘Wi-Fi calling on this iPhone’ for iOS. On Android, head to the Settings menu of the Phone app, and toggle Wi-Fi calling on.
