Threads finally gets hashtags, but there’s a catch

Threads now has tags minus the 'hash' symbol

Threads finally gets hashtags, but there’s a catch
Threads has not shied away when being compared with X (formerly Twitter). However, users frequenting both these apps lamented about the former not having a hashtag equivalent on its desktop or smartphone version. But that is set to change as CEO Adam Mosseri recently announced hashtag support for Instagram Threads — christened ‘Tags’. But while the interface for Threads more or less remains the same as X, there are a few changes that remain unique to this feature. Check out all that you need to know about it:

How are Threads tags different from hashtags on X?

Hashtags on X, or Twitter, were a fan favourite for being easy to use and searchable. All you had to do was add a ‘#’ symbol to create your own unique hashtag. The feature also allowed the platform to determine what were the trending topics of the day on the app. Threads, on the other hand, will not make the ‘#’ mark visible.

All you have to do is compose a post and add your topic of interest with the hashtag. But unlike X, you will be able to fit in special characters and spaces. Yes, you can even tag an entire sentence! That said, the primary function of tags will remain the same and will allow users to connect over common interests.

Threads tags: But where's the catch?

While the functionality of tags remains close to home, there is a catch that Meta has implemented to keep the feature separate from that of X. Users on Threads can use a maximum of one tag. Although the motive behind this rule is unclear, several believe that this was added to put a tab on the incessant hashtag spamming. Many also took to the platform to talk about how the single-tag limit allows them to ‘think before they post’.

When will the feature be available to Threads users?

Meta mentions how this feature has already begun rolling out for Threads users across the world. And once you have it, you can start tagging your favourite topics, along with connecting with like-minded accounts based on your search. Instagram Threads may have started out like the ‘Twitter-clone‘, but multiple developments rolling out today show how it has taken to bring in improvements for a better overall user experience — and we’re undoubtedly here for it!
