You can catch 'em all on Google Search!

The latest Google Search easter egg makes it a functioning Pokédex

Google has quietly transformed its mobile search into a delightful Pokémon-catching minigame that lets fans collect all 151 original Pokémon straight from the Kanto region. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or someone who just wants to relive their childhood for a few minutes, this new Easter egg is a fun and easy way to dive back into the world of Pokémon to catch ‘em all – without ever leaving your browser.

This isn’t Google’s first playful collaboration with pop culture icons. From rolling up search results with a Katamari ball to splattering your screen with Splatoon ink, the search giant has made a habit of injecting whimsy into your daily internet use. Pokémon, of course, is no stranger to the Googleverse either; remember when Google Maps had people searching the world for Pokémon back in 2014?

Well, now they’re back at it – this time in your mobile’s search bar.

To jump in, just open Google Search on your mobile device or the Google app, and search for any Pokémon from the original Kanto Pokédex – say, “Psyduck.” Once the results load, a Pokéball icon will appear in the lower right corner. Tap it, and your screen will transform as the Pokémon appears and is “caught” in a playful animation.

After capturing one, you’ll be encouraged to keep searching for others. As you collect more, your digital Pokédex fills up. There’s even a progress screen that helps you track how many Pokémon you’ve caught and which ones are still missing.

But there’s a catch (pun intended): you must be logged into your Google account for your progress to be saved. If you’re not signed in, you can still play, but your Pokédex will reset each time you leave.

Legendary Pokémon like Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo aren’t immediately available. You’ll need to collect at least five Pokémon to earn a Master Ball; only then can you attempt to catch these rarer creatures.

A digital treasure hunt for fans

There’s no official tie-in with Pokémon Day or a new game release, so the mini-game feels more like a love letter to the franchise than a promotional stunt. Whether it’s nostalgia or novelty that draws you in, it’s a reminder of how culture, tech, and a bit of play can blend to brighten your day.
