Sony PS5 Slim vs Sony PS5: What’s different this time around?

It’s been nearly five months since Sony first announced the PS5 Slim, the leaner sibling of the original PlayStation 5, launched in 2020. Unfortunately, however, there had been no word on whether the latest iteration of Sony’s iconic PlayStation gaming consoles would make it to our shores.

That was until today, however. For the Sony PS5 Slim goes on sale in India today. Now though, if you’re in the market looking to invest in a new PlayStation, you may wonder just how the two differ, and which of them makes for a good investment. Fret not, for we’ve put together this little comparison between the two, to help you answer just that.

Sony PS5 Slim vs Sony PS5: Design

First off, let’s get the biggest difference out of the way. The “Slim” PS5 and the standard PS5 have a broadly similar design, with two white plastic exterior panels and a central black column. However, the PS5 Slim has a width of 35.8cm, and a height of 9.6cm, whereas the PS5 has a width of 39cm and a height of 10.4cm.

The former, in addition to being compact, is also lighter. The PS5 Slim weighs about 3.2kg, whereas the PS5 weighs in at 4.5kg weight. Overall, the volume of the PS5 is about 30 per cent lesser, as per Sony. This should make it a good investment, should your house happen to be short on space.

Sony PS5 Slim vs Sony PS5: Performance and storage

Now, if you happen to have just bought a PS5, and may be regretting the same, believing that the PS5 Slim may get upgraded specs too, we’ve got some good news for you The Sony PS5 Slim and standard PS5 are nearly identical when it comes to specs.

Both of the consoles use the same 8-core AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor, coupled to an AMD RDNA 2 graphics card, and get 16GB RAM. What’s more, the PS5 Slim also gets all of the Sony PS5’s features such as Tempest 3D audio tech and support for 4K video output, as well as a 120Hz refresh rate support for compatible games.

The only notable difference between the two is storage space. While the PS5 Slim gets a 1TB SSD with roughly 850GB of usable space, the PS5 gets an 825GB SSD, with about 660GB of usable space.

Sony PS5 Slim vs Sony PS5: Connectivity

Now, connectivity is again another aspect that separates the two models.

The PS5 Slim gets a removable disk drive. This, in addition to making the console a little more portable in one sense, also allows owners of the PS5 Slim Digital Edition to convert their console to a standard PS5 Slim on the fly. What’s more, should the disk drive ever fail, this also makes it easier to replace the same at home rather than sending it to a service centre for repair.

Additionally, though, the PS5 Slim also ditches the USB Type-A port on its front panel in favour of a second USB Type-C port. USB Type-C allows for faster data transfers and is compatible with a vast majority of PS5 accessories too.

Sony PS5 Slim vs Sony PS5: Pricing and availability

The Sony PS5 Slim and standard PS5 will both be available to purchase in India, and will both be available in the standard white colour. The Sony PS5 Slim Digital Edition is priced at Rs 44,990, while the Sony PS5 Slim Disc Edition is priced at Rs 54,990, which matches it with the price of the standard PS5 variants, at least for now.

Should you invest in the PS5 Slim?

Well, if you’re in the market for a new PlayStation 5 and have a bit of a space constraint on your desk back home, the PS5 Slim definitely makes for great investment bearing in mind how the reduced footprint hasn’t resulted in a reduction in performance, and even allows for improved storage space. Not to mention, the ability to play games on a disc on the digital edition of the console too.

Alternatively, if you’ve just brought home a PS5 or are about to, fret not, for the PS5 remains an extremely potent machine in its own right. If you can live with the slightly lower storage capacity, the standard PS5 still remains an extremely value for money proposition.
