Samsung announces glass-free 3D monitor ahead of CES 2025

Samsung is going big on displays at CES this year, announcing a total of five new monitors

Samsung announces glass-free 3D monitor ahead of CES 2025

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is one of those expos where you’re almost certain to see some cool new display tech each year. Last year, that included transparent TVs like the LG Signature OLED T. Ahead of CES 2025, though, Samsung has a new monitor in the pipeline that would make Tony Stark proud.

We’re talking about the new Samsung Odyssey 3D, which is one among the five new monitors that the brand just made official, days before CES 2025 kicks off. Here’s everything we know about the monitor and what it can do.

Samsung Odyssey 3D: What’s new?

The Samsung Odyssey 3D is a 27-inch, 3D gaming monitor. It can make subjects pop out of the screen, and the best part is that it does this without requiring any glasses. Instead, the Odyssey 3D uses a front camera decked with sensors to track the movements of your face and your eyes, and then adjust anything on the screen accordingly in real time to create that 3D effect.

But what good is such a monitor when you have no 3D content to play on it? As it turns out, that’s something Samsung thought of as well. This is why the Samsung Odyssey 3D also has built-in software that understands 2D shapes and gives them a 3D look.

In theory, this will not only let you enjoy 3D content, but also 2D content in 3D. For gamers, this could mean swinging through New York City in 3D as Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man, or driving a Lamborghini Sesto Elemento through the life-like straights in Mexico in Forza Horizon 5.

Of course, how well the 3D conversion tech actually works remains to be seen. It is also not clear if the implementation will require any support from game developers as well. All these doubts should be cleared soon at CES 2025 though, where we should also get other information around the monitors, including pricing.

Other Samsung monitors announced

In addition to the Odyssey 3D, Samsung also announced four more new monitors, which we should see at CES this year, and which should be available for sale later on in 2025. These are as follows.

Samsung Smart Monitor M9: An AI-powered monitor with a built-in picture optimiser that can upscale SD content to 4K resolutions. It also packs a 32-inch OLED panel with up to 165Hz refresh rate, making it an all-round monitor for pretty much any task, including gaming.

Samsung Viewfinity S8: A productivity and content-creation focussed 37-inch 4K monitor with a 16:9 aspect ratio, Type-C connectivity and eye-care certifications for the office.

All these monitors should be showcased at CES 2025, which kicks off from January 7. Stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for all the updates from the expo.
