Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: What’s different?

As smartphone screens continue to get bigger and bigger, the base Samsung Galaxy S24 and S23 stand out as fantastic flagship options for those who prefer a phone that’s both comfortable to hold and use with one hand.

Samsung’s recent commitment to extended software support for its 2024 Galaxy S lineup makes the decision between this year’s model and last year’s even tougher. The Galaxy S23, now at a more attractive price point, is a convincing choice for many and can handle most tasks you throw at it.

But is the extra spend on the Galaxy S24 justified? While Samsung has taken a more subtle approach with design changes in recent base Galaxy S variants, the S24 offers some intriguing updates, including a slightly larger and brighter display, improved camera processing thanks to a new chip, a bump in battery life, and the inclusion of new Galaxy AI software features.

So, how do these changes translate to real-world use? Do they make a significant difference compared to the S23? In this article, we’ll take a look at how the Samsung Galaxy S24 stacks up against its predecessor, the S23.

Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: Design and display

Both the Galaxy S24 and S23 are excellent phone choices for those who prefer a smaller phone. The S24 features a slightly larger, 6.2-inch display compared to the S23’s 6.1 inches, thanks to slimmer bezels, keeping the overall footprint similar. Both phones offer Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, but the S24 features a flatter frame design.

While both the Galaxy S24 and S23 have 120Hz refresh rate displays, the S24’s display is a step up. It offers a higher peak brightness (reaching 2000 nits), potentially making it more viewable in bright conditions.

Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: Performance and storage

The Galaxy S24 features the brand-new Exynos 2400 chip, built on a cutting-edge 4nm 4LPP+ (EUV) manufacturing process. This allows for significant performance improvements over the previous generation, with benchmarks showing the Exynos 2400 outperforming the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the S23, especially in single-core performance.

Furthermore, Samsung has pledged that the Galaxy S24 will receive a massive seven years of OS upgrades, compared to the S23’s guaranteed four years of OS upgrades and five years of security updates.

Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: Battery life

While the Galaxy S24 has a marginally larger battery (4,000mAh vs 3,900mAh) translating to longer video playback, there’s little to no difference in battery life and you’ll mostly get the same 15 to 16 hours of battery life, depending on your usage. Also, charging speeds remain unchanged at 25W for both phones and they take the same amount of time for a full charging cycle.

Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: Camera quality

Both the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S23 get a triple camera setup at the rear, with a 50MP primary sensor, a 10MP telephoto sensor, and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. In terms of hardware here at least, both phones are on par with each other. However, bear in mind that the S24 takes advantage of a different processing approach, that delivers a more natural look, as compared to the S23’s vibrant photos.

Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: Pricing and availability

The Samsung Galaxy S24 is priced at Rs 74,999 for the base 128GB storage variant, while the 512GB and 1TB storage variants are priced at Rs 79,999 and Rs 89,999 respectively.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S23 starts at Rs 49,999 for the 128GB storage variant, while the 256GB version is priced at Rs. 54,999 and Rs 94,999 for the 512GB storage variant.

Should you upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S24?

Considering the price-to-performance bump, it’s a close call. The S24 offers a brighter display, a more powerful processor, and a slightly upgraded battery and cameras. But it does so with a price hike of nearly Rs 25,000.

That said, both the base Galaxy S24 and S23 are very potent offerings in their own right. The Galaxy S24 offers some extremely enticing upgrades. Especially, the AI features and seven years of software updates.

However, considering at least the AI features are also coming to the base Galaxy S23, the phone still provides great value for the money if you don’t prefer the latest and greatest processor, or aren’t a hardcore user in general.
