Rumours of Netflix getting rid of its cheapest plans have been floating around for a while, but now, the popular streaming platform has officially made it official. As per a new report by The Verge, Netflix has begun phasing out its cheapest ad-free plans from multiple regions.
These regions include UK and Canada for now, but the move may expand to many more countries later on.

A number of Netflix users took to Reddit to voice their disapproval of the new change, which for many long-time Netflix users will mean one thing – switch to more expensive plans, switch to ad-supporting plans, or quit Netflix altogether. Customers ended their current plan with a note that informed them that the “Basic plan has been discontinued” and that they can change their plan at any time.
Customers paying $11.99 every month for the Netflix Basic Plan will have to now choose between the $6.99 plan (which is more affordable, but comes with ads) or the $15.49 plan, which costs significantly more. This is not even including 4K streaming, which alone will set users back by $22.99 every month.
Netflix plans in India
The move is yet to take form in many popular Netflix markets including the US itself and India, with the latter yet to be introduced to any kind of ad-supporting plan to begin with.

In India Netflix plans start at Rs 149 per month for smartphones, and go all the way up to Rs 649 per month for 4K streaming on multiple platforms including laptops and TVs, with all of the four plans actually being ad-free.
It seems users in India need not worry about the prices of Netflix plans going up (either directly or indirectly) for now. However, whether such a change and ad-supporting plans in general are something Netflix wants to bring to the Indian market later on, remains to be seen.
