Midjourney is officially free for everyone now, but there’s a catch

Midjourney has been the biggest name in AI-powered text-to-image generation for over a year now. While a number of AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Copilot have added the feature to their arsenal over time, chances are the artists and professionals around you have stuck with Midjourney.

While the tool’s prowess in bringing what’s in your head to your screen, the tool has always been a paid one, requiring a subscription to work, no matter how frequently (or infrequently) you want to use it. That changes now.

Midjourney has finally launched a new program that let’s anyone sign up for free and use the platform for creating images. Here’s all you need to know about it.

Midjourney goes free: What you need to know

Anyone with an existing Discord or Google account can now simply open a browser on their laptop or desktop, hop on to the Midjourney website, sign in, and use the tool for free. No compromise in functionality included.

However, there is a cap on how long you can use the tool without pulling out your wallet. Midjourney is letting users edit up to 25 images after signing up via its new free trial. Beyond these 25 images, you will have to pick from one of Midjourney’s subscription plans to continue generating more images.

A brief history into Midjourney

Midjourney was initially launched as a Discord underling, making text-based prompts a little bit of a hassle. However, when the tool started picking up a lot of users, a dedicated website was launched. Only those who had created over 10,000 images on the Discord version of the tool were allowed to use the website, though.

Now, the site is finally opening up to more people, and the 25-image free trial looks like a good way to hook in new users, many of whom are just beginning to be introduced to image generation on other platforms. However, platforms like Copilot offer its image generation abilities for free with a limit that is replenished daily. So, whether Midjourney retains its new users after the free trial is over, remains to be seen.
