Meta SAM 2 AI model announced to make video editing much easier

Meta recently launched the Meta AI chatbot across all its instant communication platforms including Instagram and WhatsApp. Now the company has announced its latest innovation in the artificial intelligence space. This is the new SAM 2 AI model, which is short for Segment Anything Model 2.

The SAM 2 AI model can be used to edit videos with ease. It can track particular objects in videos in real-time and do much more. Here’s everything you need to know about the new model.

Meta SAM 2 AI model: What’s new?

The SAM 2 AI model’s primarily purpose is video editing. The model can create different layers for a subject in a video, and facilitates the addition of special effects to this subject, while keeping the background unchanged.

For instance, if you have a video of a man walking around that needs editing, SAM 2 can accurately identify the man, and apply editing effects to just him, intelligently separating him from the background. All of this is done using AI, and can be processed in seconds.

The new model will be a part of Meta’s apps like Instagram, which could mean a lot more intelligent editing options in the popular social media platform, right on your smartphones.

For the uninitiated, current editing features in Instagram like backdrops and cutouts are powered by the first iteration of SAM. The new second model will now enable even more features.

Meta has also announced that the SAM 2 model is open source, which basically means any software developer with the relevant skills can inspect the code of the AI model. This is similar to Android, an open-source operating system that can be customised and implemented in several Android phones.

Moreover, they can also implement the model in their own apps. This will also allow developers to access the SA-V dataset (over four times the videos compared to any current video dataset) that the SAM 2 model is based on.

Some aspects, however, are still a mystery. We don’t know if the SAM 2 model will be a part of the Meta AI chatbot’s functionalities, which would allow it to also operate on apps like WhatsApp. Meta has also not yet announced when it plans on bringing the new model to Facebook or Instagram, which could take months.
