MediaTek introduces on-device AI tool that generates photos as you type

A lot at Mobile World Congress 2024 has been about artificial intelligence. In fact, several brands showcased their AI prowess across categories beyond smartphones; these include modems, tablets and even wearable pins! However, it was MediaTek that stole the show with its on-device AI tool that makes for the fastest image generator to be in existence so far.

MediaTek AI-generation tool: What's different?

For one, it lets users create images as they type. While multiple brands have created similar models, the standard wait time to generate an image is about 15 seconds. MediaTek’s newest tool surpasses this barrier and delivers results in real time. This essentially means the generator will show you a picture of a shiny, red car before you can finish typing, say, ‘red card’.

The tool will continue to modify the image as and when more prompts are added to the sentence. An example of this could probably be observed in Samsung’s Generative AI wallpapers, which will give you results within minutes. However, the chip maker still remains faster than any of the previously seen examples.

According to a Mashable report, demo units at MWC 24 seemed to be using the latest generation of APU (AI processing unit), a hardware part of Mediatek’s Dimensity 9300 smartphone chip. However, the company mentioned how these were completely on-device, and it may not entirely be a stretch to imagine them on smartphones in the near future.

In yet another demo, the company demonstrated video generation based on text prompts. However, the results took about 30 seconds to show up. That said, there’s no denying that a lot of our future looks to be as effortless as typing a couple of words to create mind-boggling visuals on our hand-held devices.
