Measure app on iPhones has a super underrated tool; here’s how it works

iPhones, for years, have had neat little features tucked away that even the most seasoned users seem to have no inkling about. That’s because most of them are hidden away inside the devices’ utility apps, which most users never really explore.

Some of these include a sleep timer function for Music in the Clock app, the Notes app’s in-built document scanner, a hidden trackpad on the keyboard, back tap for controls on the iPhone such as double tapping to turn on the camera, or triple tap to turn on the flashlight.

Well, another such app with a few rather neat tricks up its sleeve happens to be the Measure app. Read on.

What the Measure app on iPhones is used for

The app can measure the dimensions of squares and rectangles, and even odd-shaped objects from any point to any point, as per your choosing, using Augmented Reality.

What’s more, on the Pro models (from the iPhone 12 series and later), it even allows you to see guidelines and measure a person’s height, using an in-built LiDAR scanner. What’s cool is, you can also change the units of measurements from centimeters to inches and the other way around, save your measurements as a picture in the Photos app, and much more.

However, another feature it has, and an extremely underrated one at that, is its in-built spirit-level tool. Here’s all you need to know about what it does, and how to use it.

Spirit level tool on the Measure app: What it does and how to use it

The Measure app for the iPhone 6S and all later models comes with an in-built virtual spirit level tool. The tool is a great addition, especially if you happen to dabble in photography, or even DIY projects at home.

What it does exactly, is allow you to measure if an object (or a subject in your camera’s frame) is exactly perpendicular to the ground. In simpler terms, if you were to say, mount a painting in your living room at home, and want to find out if it is straight and level, you could figure out the same using the Measure app.

That’s not all, though. In addition to objects being level horizontally, the spirit level tool also lets you figure out if they are perfectly vertical.

Here’s how to use the Measure app’s spirit level tool on your iPhone:

1. Find and open the measure app on your iPhone

2. Tap the “Level” tab on the bottom.

3. Hold your iPhone against the object that you want to see is straight or not.

4. To check if the object is level, rotate your iPhone until the screen turns green and displays 0 degrees on the screen, and rotate your object accordingly.

What’s cool is, the app can also be used to measure the slope of another object, if you want them to be placed at a certain angle.

The Measure app for iPhones has several real-world applications in your everyday life and can make things like setting up a new home or framing a subject to take a picture a breeze, if used right. Give it a whirl!
