Flat monitor or curved? You choose

LG’s new gaming monitor has a big 5K OLED panel that can bend when you need it to

LG is known for making some of the best display panels out there from smartphones to TVs, but its latest announcements is a treat for gamers, and also a big step for the future of monitors in general. Meet the LG UltraGear GX9 OLED – a massive 45-inch OLED display panel with 5K resolution, which gives it a pixel density of 125 PPI.

That said, the highlight of this panel is that it is a bendable OLED panel. This means it can be set up flat if required, or curved. This gives the monitor the perks of both a straight panel and a curved panel monitor.

Why a bendable gaming monitor makes sense?

Gamers enjoying a visually immersive title like Marvel’s Spider-Man series, Microsoft Flight Simulator or Ghost of Tsushima solo can curve the panel and have the entire 45-inch display pointed towards their eyes, maximising the immersive ability.

However, when you’re playing multiplayer, you can also flatten the panel and have a more uniform experience for two or more gamers. It isn’t clear if LG has a mechanism to make the switch from flat to curved (and vice versa) yet, but the fact that something like this is possible should be enough to get gamers excited.

On top of all this, the LG UltraGear GX9 is also an OLED display. This means punchy colours, deeper blacks and a great gaming experience irrespective of whether you’re gaming in the day or night, just like LG’s OLED TVs.

The monitor has a 5120 x 2150 resolution spread across a 21:9 aspect ratio too, which makes it great for not only ultrawide gaming (for games that support the aspect ratio) but also for movies and shows, which can make the most of the panel.

There are also some other features like LG’s Dual-Mode which lets you switch between multiple resolution + refresh rate presets quickly.

No pricing or availability details have been announced just yet, which means this futuristic monitor is as close as it gets to being a concept device. Don’t be surprised if you spot one at CES 2025, which is just days away. That said, expect the monitor to carry a hefty price tag, but LG is also making a non-bendable version of the monitor, which should be a little more affordable.
