Just a camera button, or is there more?

iPhone 16 series Camera Control feature explained

The new iPhone 16 series is here, and among several new changes, what perhaps is the standout addition across the board with the new iPhones, is Camera Control. A dedicated camera button that can do more than just take pictures – now that’s an interesting concept for Apple to work with.

Ahead of the new iPhone 16 series models going on sale, let’s look at Camera Control in depth, and understand just what it does and why you’d want it.

iPhone 16: What is Camera Control?

Camera Control refers to a range of hardware-powered features on the iPhone 16 series. The feature is available on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The new phones will have a new capacitive touch key on the lower right edge of the device, placed below the power button. This button will come with advanced sensors and triggers that will replicate the feeling of a real button when pressed.

The button also comes with multiple functions, and can be light-pressed, fully-pressed, double tapped on, and even swiped on – all of which will offer unique functions.

iPhone 16: What can Camera Control do?

As Apple demonstrated during the launch event, Camera Control can be used to quickly open the camera app from any screen. From here, the same button can be light pressed to open up multiple quick camera settings like zoom, exposure and more.

Users can then swipe left or right on these to control these elements, after which a full press from this point will result in a shot being taken, while a long press will begin video recording.

Apple will also allow some third-party apps to make use of the Camera Control feature for added functionality, like Snapchat. However, it remains to be seen what apps will be able to make use of this feature, and whether Apple will release a special API for apps to gain control of the Camera Control button.
