Key differences compared between Apple’s current and erstwhile flagship

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: What’s different?

The ‘Pro Max’ versions of iPhones are the flagship models of every iPhone generation, with top-of-the-line specifications. They also pack upgrades here and there with the launch of each new generation, when compared to their predecessor. The iPhone 15 Pro Max was released last year and is due to get its successor as soon as September. Meanwhile, the device’s predecessor will be two years old now, having debuted in 2022.

Now, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max are not vastly different from each other, apart from a few upgrades. The most notable difference between the two devices is that the current-generation offering packs a more durable body and a more powerful processor.

However, if you’re wondering if it’s worth upgrading to the former, especially if you already happen to be using the latter, we’ve put together a list of the differences between the two, to help you make a choice.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Design

As mentioned earlier, the iPhone 15 Pro Max gets a design upgrade when compared to its predecessor. The device boasts an aerospace-grade titanium alloy unibody that is much stronger and lighter compared to the stainless steel on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple has also managed to reduce the weight of the current generation to 221 grams compared to 240 grams on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Another interesting addition to the iPhone 15 Pro Max is that it replaces the legacy mute switch with an Action Button. It can be used to mute the device but also be configured to execute a string of commands like launch the camera app, flashlight, and more.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max have the same overall design including a flat frame and a square camera module. Both phones are IP68-certified dust and water-resistant.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Cameras

The iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max have the same 48MP f/1.8 main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a ToF 3D LiDAR scanner. There is dual-pixel PDAF and sensor-shift OIS on offer as well.

However, the current generation has a massive advantage. It lets you choose between 24, 28, and 34mm focal lengths on the main camera. Meanwhile, although the megapixel count remains unchanged on the third unit i.e. the 12MP unit, the lens on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is a periscope with a tetraprism design, that offers 120mm of pure zoom (or 5x optical zoom).

In terms of videography, along with cinematic mode, Dolby Vision HDR, recording and up to 4K at 60 fps, the iPhone 15 Pro Max also has the ability to shoot 3D spatial videos for an immersive footage result.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Processor and RAM

Under the hood, the iPhone 15 Pro Max houses a powerful A17 Pro chipset that is touted to deliver the best graphics performance with a Pro-class GPU featuring six cores, a Neural Engine, and ray tracing. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is equipped with an A16 Bionic chipset. A noteworthy mention is that the current generation offering is capable of running many AAA gaming titles. The iPhone 15 Pro Max also bumps up the RAM capacity to 8GB on all storage configurations from 6GB on its predecessor.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Battery and connectivity

The iPhone 15 Pro Max gets an incremental battery upgrade. It is backed by a 4,441mAh cell compared to a 4,323mAh unit on the 14 Pro Max. Both phones support 20W wired and 15W wireless charging speed.

The current model however, which is perhaps one of the biggest upgrades on the same, switches from the iconic lightning port to the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port. It is capable of blazing fast data transfer speeds, connecting to 4K displays, and also reverse charging AirPods and Apple Watch.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Common specifications

Apart from the aforementioned differences, both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max boast a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with 120Hz ProMotion, True Tone, Dynamic Island, and HDR10 support. Both phones are equipped with sensors that can detect car crashes and call emergency services.

There’s also emergency SOS via satellite connectivity that lets you send texts when there is no network coverage.

Should you upgrade to the iPhone 15 Pro Max?

If you have an older iPhone and planning for an upgrade, it’s a prudent decision to go with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. But, not so much on the other hand if you own an iPhone 14 Pro Max unless you’re getting a great trade-in value. However, do note that every year Apple discontinues the Pro Max models with the release of a new one. That means, with the iPhone 16 series around the corner, it won’t be long before the iPhone 15 Pro Max goes off the shelves as well.
