iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max: Why your new Pro iPhones deserve a case

Apple’s new titanium iPhones may need a little more TLC than usual

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max: Why your new Pro iPhones deserve a case

The new titanium body on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are among the major highlights of the new Apple phones, helping make them lighter by about 10 per cent. However, with the perks of the stronger and lighter titanium bodies, comes one minor annoyance – the need for regular upkeep.

In a new cleaning support document, spotted by MacRumors, Apple reveals that the natural oils of the skin (which are bound to get on the phones during use) may temporarily alter the colour of the titanium chassis. For the uninitiated, this is the metal that goes around your iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, as the front and back are still made of glass. Note that this discolouration doesn’t apply to the base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

Among the newer colours, it seems the Blue Titanium and Black Titanium are more vulnerable to this discolouration, compared to the lighter White Titanium and Natural Titanium colourways. However, the good news is this discolouration is temporary, and all you need to get rid of it is a wipe with a soft, damp, lint-free cloth.

Why you need to put your iPhone in a case

The titanium discolouration only matters if you choose to rock your new iPhone naked. Should you use a case to cover up your phone for some added protection, you eliminate any contact between the titanium bits of the device and your hands, also eliminating the possibility of any discolouration. For this very reason, we recommend you slap a case on your new iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max the first chance you get.

A case also protects your iPhone from impacts and bends, which can damage the phone, leading to costly repairs and a lower resale value in the future. The iPhone 15 Pro series, despite the addition of a titanium chassis, can be damaged, as seen in a recent video by YouTuber JerryRigEverything.

Despite the stronger edges of the phone, the glass front and back of the iPhone 15 Pro and, especially the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max, are still vulnerable to damage, either on impact, or when under stress. This means your new iPhone could bend and crack its back if you accidentally sit on it when it’s in the rear pocket of your jeans, or similar scenarios. Again, a quality phone case will offer you additional protection from such scenarios.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are the most powerful iPhones ever created, and its highlights include everything from the stronger titanium chassis to the new A17 Pro chip and an improved camera setup. However, it may not be a great idea to use your iPhone without a case this year, for both safety and aesthetic reasons. That said, if you’re confident about not damaging the phone, or have an AppleCare+ plan to cover your back, you may still continue using your device case-free.
