Whether you’re upgrading from an older iPhone or making a fresh switch to iOS, what iPhone to buy can always be a confusing question. With a number of iPhones available at the same time, some models will be older but available at big discounts, others will be more expensive but sport newer features.
We’re here to help you choose between two very popular iPhones right now, the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14 series. Here’s a head-to-head between the devices including features, specifications and more.
iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: Specifications
The Apple iPhone 13 series includes the base iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The entire series is powered by the company’s A15 Bionic chipset. While the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 only differ in size, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max include additional features like a telephoto camera, more RAM, a slightly brighter screen and a high refresh rate display.

The iPhone 14 series also features four variants – the base iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. While the non-Pro variants are still powered by the Apple A15 Bionic chip, the two Pro versions are powered by the new Apple A16 chip.
Of course, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max also come with additional Pro-only perks including the extra camera, extra RAM, high refresh rate display, and more. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max also feature the Dynamic Island tech, which seamlessly integrates the central pill-shaped notch with your notifications and live activities.
iPhone 13 vs iPhone 14: Features
The iPhone 14 series also comes with some additional features that the iPhone 13 misses out on. These include crash detection and Apple’s new Photonic Engine.
Apple’s Crash Detection tech works by detecting severe car crashes across various classes of vehicles and acts quickly by allowing emergency services to reach you quickly. The feature also works with rollovers and allows users to cancel an outgoing emergency call for 20 seconds, which is handy in case of any false detection.

Meanwhile, Photonic Engine is a computational photography technology that uses machine learning and software to improve the pictures you capture with your iPhone 14. The feature works especially well for low-light images.
Lastly, the Apple iPhone 14 series will also come with an extra year of software support compared to the iPhone 13 series. This means a whole year’s worth of iOS software updates as well smaller bug-fixing updates.
Conclusion
The Apple iPhone 14 and 13 series both include powerful smartphones by today’s standards, but which iPhone is right for you will come down to personal preferences. As you might have gauged from the above sections, the iPhone 14 series is newer, sports more features, and will be the better buy for those who can afford the extra price. This is especially true for the 14 Pro variants, where you get Dynamic Island support. Get the iPhone 14 series if the budget is not a problem.
On the other hand, those who are looking to save some money can still stick to the iPhone 13 variants. While nearly two years old, the iPhone 13 series still holds strong today, and the base variant is almost identical to the newer base iPhone 14. If you’re looking to save on some cash and if perks like an extra year of updates aren’t as important to you, get the iPhone 13 series.
