Instagram may soon let you generate unique profile pictures using AI

Social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, and of course Instagram, seem to be going all out on AI features these days. In a bid to allow users to personalise their profiles a little more, the platform is reportedly testing a new feature that allows you to generate profile pictures using AI. Read on.

AI-profile picture generation on Instagram: What you need to know

Developer Alessandro Paluzzi in a post on microblogging platform Threads, shared a screenshot wherein he found a new menu option that said ‘Create an AI profile picture’. Now, keep in mind that the feature has not been rolled out publicly as of yet, and hence, very little is known of just how it works.

As per reports. the feature will more than likely be powered by Meta’s Llama Large Language Model (LLM) and will work in either one of two ways. These could include generating images entirely from scratch using text-based prompts, or your existing profile picture being changed into various styles using AI.

Either way, the feature will add a new layer of personalisation to one’s Instagram profile, as and when (if at all) is rolled out. Additionally, rumours also suggest that a similar feature may be rolled out to the Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp, as well as Facebook.

Whether this feature will be rolled out only to smartphones, or to laptops and desktops as well, remains unknown too.

Other AI features to look out for on Instagram

All of Meta’s platforms, including Instagram, have never been one to shy away from rolling out AI features to their users. Just recently, Meta began to roll out a feature called adult classifier, which will automatically ascertain users’ age, based on their usage patterns and profile information. If it detects that one is under 18, it switches them to a teen account, which restricts the kind of posts that show up on their feed, as well as the people who can send them a message on the platform.

The platform also provides users with access to the Meta AI chatbot, which can generate text and images, as well as summarise it. Additionally, the platform also allows creators to come up with AI characters with which fans can interact in their DMs.

While some of the aforementioned AI features have already been rolled out for users, some of them are still in the works, and should hopefully be rolled out for users globally soon.
