ChatGPT needs no introduction as we head into 2024. The most used AI-chatbot by far, the tool has continuously upgraded itself over the past year, expanding to more devices via dedicated Android and iOS apps, as well as adding new features and capabilities. The latest of its abilities is ChatGPT voice conversation, a audio-based mode of interaction with the app that uses audio for both input and output. Here’s how it works, and how you can use it.
What is ChatGPT Voice?
ChatGPT voice conversation is the tool’s newest feature that takes audio cues for input and speaks responses as output, allowing users to talk to ChatGPT rather than rely on the type and wait for a response approach. ChatGPT is now equipped with five distinct voices, and the tool also throws in the occasion ‘umm’ and mid-sentence pause to make conversation feel more natural.

As a result, talking to ChatGPT feels more like talking to a real person than any other form of interaction with an AI tool before. This is the closest we have to Iron Man’s JARVIS, as ChatGPT voice conversations still retain the knowledge-base of the chatbot, and can fetch, summarise and modify information in seconds.
How to use ChatGPT voice conversation?
You can use ChatGPT voice conversation via the app on Android or iOS smartphones. Simply head to the app, and on the main screen, you should see a headphone-shaped icon on the right side of the text box. Tap on this to get started. On the first time using the feature, you might have to set up a few things like the voice choice and audio permissions.
Once set up, you can simply start talking. The app will automatically detect when a sentence or question has ended and will respond. When the response is done, you can resume speaking your own response or the next sentence/question right away, eliminating the need to tap or type completely once a conversation has kicked off. You can even put your earphones on, pocket your phone, and speak to ChatGPT as you take a walk.
You can end the conversation at any point by pressing the circular button with a cross in it in the middle of the screen. At this point, you will also see a log of your entire conversation, allowing you to copy any responses, should you want to.
Access ChatGPT voice conversation quickly on iPhone 15 Pro series
If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, you can even make the feature more accessible via the Action Button, allowing you to initiate a conversation with ChatGPT at the press of a button.

Head to Settings > Action Button and swipe till you’re on the ‘Shortcut’ option. Now use the menu below to choose your Shortcut and amidst the list, you should find the ‘Start voice conversation’ option, under the ChatGPT section. Select it and you’re good to go. Simply press the Action Button to bring up the feature. Other iPhones which don’t have this functionality can bring the same Shortcut to their home screen and have the feature a tap away.
That’s it. You have now learned how to converse with ChatGPT, your new friend, and perhaps the smartest one around. Feel free to explore the capabilities of the feature by trying new queries when you try the feature next.
