How to use AI to decide what movies to watch

If you’re the type who spends more time indecisively mulling over movie lists than actually watching movies, you might want to consider letting an AI model pick your movies for you. Modern AI is surprisingly good at recommending movies based on the movies you’ve seen, especially if you’re looking for something that isn’t mainstream.

ChatGPT is your friend

ChatGPT is amazing at just about everything, including movie recommendations. Head to chatgpt.com or fire up the app on your phone to start a conversation and give it as much information as you can on your preferences.

If you’re feeling lazy, you can simply ask ChatGPT for a recommendation and have it tune recommendations based on subsequent conversations. The more information you give about your preferences, the better the recommendations you get. 

In fact, between ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot (which is running a variant of ChatGPT), and Gemini, we found ChatGPT to be delivering the most useful results, especially when you’re looking for more obscure recommendations. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Have you tried Pix?

Pix is a dedicated AI designed for content recommendations. You’ll find it on likewise.com and can ask Pix for recommendations on not just movies, but books, TV shows, and podcasts as well. We found Pix’s recommendations to be very good and in rare cases, more interesting than the ones from ChatGPT.

Again, prompts are key. Be as communicative as possible with your preferences. If you see a movie you like, for example, let Pix know. Oh, and don’t just restrict yourself to the movie titles. Say you’re a fan of William Gibson; inform Pix, and it’ll try to find recommendations based on Gibson’s works or derivatives of his work.

You’ll also find a few alternatives to Pix and ChatGPT if you shop around, but we generally found that between Pix and ChatGPT we could get all the recommendations we needed. Communicate your interests as you would to a friend and the results will be compelling!
