How to use Microsoft’s new AI-powered Rewrite tool on Notepad

Microsoft recently announced its plans to integrate artificial intelligence into two of its oldest Windows appsPaint and Notepad. The AI-powered addition is all set to bring generative AI features to select regions for starters, including the US, France, the UK, Canada, and Italy, among others.

Microsoft Notepad’s new AI-driven tool, Rewrite, is the newest addition that allows users to adjust the tone, rephrase sentences and modify the length of their content effectively.

How to use the Rewrite tool on Microsoft Notepad

The Rewrite tool is currently not available to users in India; however, Microsoft is expected to roll it out to a larger audience sometime soon. That said, to begin using it, you will have to follow a few simple steps. Check them out below:

Step 1: Select the text on your Notepad app on your Windows laptop or desktop, and highlight the text that you wish to modify or change

Step 2: Once done, right-click to find the new ‘Rewrite’ option in a drop-down menu

Step 3: You will then be able to find multiple editing options, including rewriting the text, modifying the tone, or switching up the format

Step 4: On selecting either of these options, Microsoft will generate three versions of your highlighted text

Step 5: You can then review the options and select the one you like. Once you do, Microsoft Notepad will replace the text on your screen

Apart from this, the Rewrite option is also available in the toolbar and can be accessed with a CTRL + I key on your keyboard.

When will these AI-powered tools be available to everyone?

Microsoft’s new AI-powered tools for both Paint and Notepad are currently only available for preview in select countries. As of today, there are also limited credits available to the users.

Apart from this, the brand has made this feature available to users with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions, or with a Copilot Pro subscription in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

While it remains unclear if or when the features will make their way to a larger audience, the features are expected to roll out to a larger audience once its preview period ends.
