How to upload images on ChatGPT from your phone or laptop

Over a year after its initial release, ChatGPT can now do much more than taking in text prompts and replying with words. You can now also incorporate images into your prompts for added contexts, which the chatbot can then understand thanks to GPT-4o.

Whether you’re using ChatGPT on smartphones or a laptops, this blog will help you understand how you can make the most of its image-comprehension abilities and upload your own images to enhance your prompts.

Do note that you will need to have access to the newest GPT 4o model to be able to upload images, something you will have if you’re a ChatGPT Plus member. However, even free members have limited access to GPT 4o, so you should be able to try out image uploads a few times before the option gets locked out.

How to upload images on ChatGPT on PC

Use a browser of your choice (Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, etc) to visit the ChatGPT website and log in with your account. On the main screen, you should see a drop-down on the top left (right next to the left pane), which will let you switch between GPT 3.5, GPT 4, or GPT 4o. Use this toggle to switch to GPT 4o.

Next, on the text box on the bottom where you type in your prompts, you should now also see a paperclip icon on the left. Click on this icon to attach an image. You can choose a local file from your PC, or use a cloud drive like Google Drive or OneDrive to upload the image from your hard drive.

Select an image from the storage platform you chose and add a text prompt to complement the image, asking the chatbot what you need from it. For instance, you can attach a picture of a monument and ask ChatGPT about its whereabouts.

How to upload images on ChatGPT on smartphones

If you’re using the ChatGPT app on iPhones or Android phones, the process is similar. Open the app and make sure you’re logged in and set up. You should see a plus (+) icon on the bottom left, next to the text box.

Tap on the icon and you should see multiple other icons including a camera icon, a photo icon and a file icon. You can choose the camera icon here to use your camera and take a picture on the spot.

Alternatively, you can photo icon to choose a photo from your phone. Tap on any of the photos you have to select it and you’re ready to go. Add a text prompt to go with your image and you can now ask ChatGPT anything about your selected image.
