How to reset a Redmi phone: A step-by-step guide

If you are using a Redmi smartphone and notice that the phone has suddenly become unresponsive or is unusually slow, then it may be time to do some troubleshooting. In such situations, people often tend to delete files on their devices but that alone won’t fix the issue. One of the ways to rectify such an issue is to reset your Redmi phone either using a hard reset or factory reset option.

How to reset a Redmi phone? Well, there are several different methods available to do so. In this comprehensive guide, we will guide you through four different methods that you can use to reset a Redmi phone.

Different methods to reset Redmi phone

Method 1: Factory reset through settings

Method 2: Hard reset via Recovery Mode

Method 3: Using Fastboot and ADB to hard reset Redmi phone

Method 4: Using Google’s Find My Device

Method 1: Factory reset Redmi phone through settings

This is the easiest and most effective way to reset your Redmi phone back to its original state. Every smartphone maker builds a factory reset option into their Android skin and Xiaomi builds the same into its MIUI. This option will be ideal if your Redmi phone is unresponsive or functioning much slower than usual. If your phone isn’t booting then this step won’t be helpful. Here’s how to factory reset your Redmi phone through settings:

Step 1: Go to the Settings app on your phone.

Step 2: Scroll down to the “About phone” option.

Step 3: Choose the “Factory Reset” option from the menu.

Step 4: Now, you will see the “Erase all data” button in the bottom pane. Tap on it.

Step 5: Enter your phone password and select Factory Reset.

By performing the above action, you will essentially reset your Redmi phone to the state that it came in from the factory. All your files and third-party applications will be removed and you can check if your phone has become more responsive than before.

Method 2: Hard reset via Recovery Mode

You can perform a hard reset for your Redmi phone via Recovery Mode especially if your device fails to boot into MIUI. This mode is another troubleshooting option that comes as part of the official MIUI firmware. Let’s assume you have a Redmi 6A and it does not boot into MIUI. One of your first thoughts would be how to reset it? Well, here’s how.

Step 1: Switch off your Redmi phone using the power button or the menu.

Step 2: Now, hold down the power button along with the volume up key for 10 seconds to enter Recovery Mode. A vibration will indicate that Recovery Mode is activated.

Step 3: In Recovery Mode, use the volume down button to scroll down to the Wipe Data option.

Step 4: Click on Wipe All Data and confirm your choice with the Confirm button.

Step 5: Go back to the main menu, choose Reboot and then Reboot to system.

The above steps will allow you to erase all information from the device without requiring a password. Remember that navigation through the Recovery Mode is only done using the volume buttons while selection is done with the power button.

Method 3: Using Google's Find My Device

This method is useful in case you lose your Redmi phone. With the help of Google’s Find My Device, you can remotely hard reset your Redmi phone.

This tool is also used to find, lock, or erase data on your device. If your device is signed into a Google account then here’s how you can use Google’s Find My Device to hard reset your Redmi phone.

Step 1: Go to Google’s Find My Device using a web browser.

Step 2: Sign in using the same Google account that you have on your Redmi phone.

Step 3: Select the lost Redmi phone.

Step 4: The device will receive a notification and its approximate location will be displayed on the map.

Step 5: Click on the “Enable lock & erase” option when prompted.

Step 6: Choose Erase Device to hard reset your Redmi phone. This will delete all the data on your device.

Either of the above methods can be used to reset your Redmi phone. While some are easy and straightforward, others require a little technical know-how. Before performing the factory reset, make sure to backup all your data, and remove SIM cards from your device.
