How to install third party apps (APKs) on Android devices

Ever felt limited by the Google Play Store’s offerings? While the official Play Store on Android has thousands of apps, there’s a whole world beyond it known as third-party apps or APKs. These apps, created by developers outside of the Play Store ecosystem, can offer unique features or functionalities that might not be available on the Play Store or even provide earlier access to beta versions.

While Apple restricts app installation on iPhones, Android’s open nature allows for more freedom. This means you can install apps that cater to your specific needs, whether it’s a more powerful photo editor or a specialised productivity tool. Here’s how you can easily install third-party Apps (APKs) on your Android phone and explore a wider range of apps.

Since third-party apps bypass Google’s vetting process and official checks, installing them requires enabling certain settings that are disabled by default.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to installing third-party APKs on your Android device:

1. Enable installation from unknown sources

Step 1: Go to your device’s Settings.

Step 2: Navigate to Apps or Apps & notifications (depending on your device).

Step 3: Tap on the three-dot menu and select Special app access.

Step 4: Choose Install unknown apps.

Step 5: Select the app you plan to use for downloading the APK (e.g. your web browser).

Step 6: Toggle the switch Allow from this source to enable installation.

2. Download the APK file

Step 1: Use a trusted website to download the desired APK. However, be cautious of unreliable sources as they might harbour malware and viruses.

Step 2:  Once downloaded, locate the APK file on your device. Downloaded files are often found in your Downloads folder.

3. Install the APK

Step 1: Tap on the downloaded APK file.

Step 2: You might see a warning prompting you to confirm the installation. If you trust the source, tap Install.

Step 3: Once the installation is complete, you’ll find the app icon on your home screen or app drawer.

Installing APKs from untrusted sources can be risky, so always make sure to only download from trusted and reputable third-party websites.

Things to keep in mind before downloading or installing third-party apps (APKs)

Third-party app stores and APKs can be tempting, offering apps usually unavailable in the Google Play Store. However, there are security risks to consider. Downloaded APKs from untrusted sources might contain malware that can steal data or harm your device. Unlike the Play Store, these sources often lack verification, so there’s no guarantee the app functions as advertised or is secure.

Be wary of apps that request excessive permissions. Additionally, third-party app stores may offer apps that don’t receive regular updates, which can leave them vulnerable. To minimise these risks, stick to reputable app stores. If a similar app exists in the Google Play Store, it’s likely the safer option.

By following these precautions, you can make informed decisions about downloading third-party apps to expand your productivity.
