Apple advises against using an uncertified charger for the Apple Watch

How to identify a certified Apple Watch charger

Apple, in a recent announcement, warned users against using an uncertified charger for their Apple Watches. In fact, in its support document, Apple went on to mention how only in-house or select third-party chargers should be used to charge an Apple Watch. If you’re worried that you’ve been using an uncertified charger, we show you how to identify an authentic one in this guide.

Why should you only use a certified Apple Watch charger?

If you’ve ever lost a charger and have thought about replacing it with an economical variant, know that you’re not the only one. And while using a third-party charger might do the trick, Apple says how this could lead to slow charging-time and repeated chimes.

Additionally, long-term usage could deter the battery life of your smartwatch, causing irreversible damage to it. However, with a range of options available online for purchase, it becomes challenging to pick out an authentic one. Here’s how to identify a certified Apple Watch charger.

How to tell if your Apple Watch charger is authentic

A certified Apple Watch charger has successfully completed its Apple MFi certification and often comes with a ‘Made for Apple Watch’ badge. Check out some of them below:

Markings: An original Apple Watch charger is white in colour and will have regulatory markings on the cable. Any other brand might have different coloured markings, designs or texts on the surface of the cable.

Manufacturer details: Another way of identifying an authentic Apple Watch charger is by connecting it to your MacBook or iMac. Once connected, visit system settings and click on ‘General’ settings in the sidebar. Next, click on About and then System Report.

You will find a USB option in the menu; expand it and choose your watch charger for additional details. On doing this, a window should pop up with the manufacturer details. If your Apple Watch charger is authentic, you will find Apple Inc. as the manufacturer in this list.

‘Made for Apple’ stamp: If you’re purchasing a MFi certified third-party charger for your Apple Watch, ensure the box has a ‘Made for Apple’ badge to determine its certification. Lastly, you can even look up the MFi database to look for your charger’s certificate.

Apple Watch charger model numbers that are certified for usage

Another way to identify if your charger is genuine is by looking for the following model numbers on the cable:

-A1570
– A1598
– A1647
– A1714
– A1768
– A1923
– A2055
– A2056
– A2086
– A2255
– A2256
– A2257
– A2458
– A2515
– A2652
– A2879

It is always a good idea to check the compatibility of your devices before purchasing a third-party accessory for them. This helps ensure their longevity and rules out any malfunction that may occur in case of a duplicate product.
