How to find out if your laptop is an AI PC

AI PCs are quickly growing in popularity, and for good reason. Artificial Intelligence is the biggest buzzword in consumer technology right now, and with some AI capabilities now being natively available on smartphones and laptops, everyone wants to own one.

But what if you recently bought a laptop, say, in the past year. You have used it for some ChatGPT and maybe some other AI tools like Midjourney. But can your laptop be classified as an AI PC?

There are a few easy ways to find out. Here’s how you can figure out if you have an AI PC on your desk or a standard laptop.

How to find out if your Windows Laptop is an AI PC

There are two ways to find out if your Windows Laptop is AI-enabled.

Specifications: Check out the specifications of your laptop to find out which chipset it has is an easy way to figure out if your laptop is an AI PC. Open the Start Menu and type ”This PC” into the search bar. On the ‘This PC’ icon, right-click and choose the ‘Properties’ option.

In the properties, you can check which processor your system is powered by. If it is an ‘Intel Core Ultra’ series processor, or a Ryzen AI series processor, your laptop is an AI PC. If you still need more help, you can try running a Google search for the exact processor you have and find out if it is AI-enabled. You can also use the second method listed below.

Task Manager: On Windows, you can also use the Task Manager to quickly find out if you have an AI PC. Hit Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard from any screen, and the Windows Task Manager should open up.

Here, navigate to the Performance tab, and you should see real-time, dynamic, performance graphs. These graphs are available for your CPU, GPU, Memory and Disk usage. However, if you have an AI PC, you will also see an NPU option listed on the left side panel.

This NPU option only shows the dedicated performance for on-device AI workloads, and will only show up if your chipset as an NPU, which is the most important part in any AI PC.

Those are two easy ways to find out if your laptop is ready for on-device AI. Note that irrespective of whether you have an AI PC or not, you will be able to use popular AI tools like ChatGPT, Mircosoft Copilot or Midjourney, and AI PCs actually help you with other on-device use-cases.
