How to find the IP address of a printer

Finding your printer’s IP address can be useful for various purposes. Firstly, users can verify the printer’s network connection and resolve conflicts caused by multiple devices sharing the same IP address. Additionally, knowing the printer’s IP address enables direct printing without the need for specific drivers or software, as some printers can be accessed directly via a web browser.

Knowing the IP address of a printer can also help in setting up remote printing, which allows users to print documents from anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. In addition, you can control which devices can access your printer by whitelisting or blacklisting specific IP addresses within the printer’s network settings.

Steps to Find the IP address of a printer

Here are the steps you need to perform to find the IP address of a printer:

On a Windows 11 PC:

1. In the taskbar, click on the Windows Start button.

2. Open Settings

3. Navigate to “Bluetooth & Devices” > “Printers & Scanners.”

4. Click on a printer from a list of printers and then click on “Printer Properties.”

5. Navigate to the General tab to see the printer’s IP address in the “Location” field.

On a Windows 10 PC:

1. Click on the Windows Start button located in the taskbar.

2. Type “Control Panel,” and once the Control Panel shows up, click on it.

3. Navigate to “Hardware and Sound” and click on “Printers & Scanners.”

4. Select a printer from a list of printers, right-click on it, and select “Properties.”

5. If you see three tabs, click on the “Web Services” tab to see the printer’s IP address, and if you see five tabs, click on the “Ports” tab to see the IP address.

On the Windows Command Prompt:

1. Click on the Windows Start menu.

2. Type “cmd” to open the Command Prompt.

3. Type “ipconfig” to see the IP address of your router.

4. Ping your router by entering the “ping (router’s IP address)” command.

5. Next, type “arp -a” to see the IP address of all the connected devices.

6. If you know your printer’s Mac address, you’ll see its IP address next to it.

7. If you don’t know your printer’s Mac address, you can type each IP address in the web browser. The IP address of your printer will open the printer’s setup page.

On a Mac:

1. Click on the Apple icon at the top-left corner of the screen.

2. Navigate to “System Preferences” and “Printers & Scanners.”

3. Select the desired printer from a list of installed printers.

4. On the right-pane, it will show many details about the printer, including its IP address.

Using a Router:

1. Open a web browser and type the router’s default gateway.

2. Login to your router by entering your username and password.

3. Click on the DHCP and then click on the DHCP Clients List to see a list of connected devices.

4. Click on your printer to view its IP address.

Note: You can type “ipconfig” in the Command Prompt to know your default gateway address.

You can also use your printer’s software installed on your PC or phone to see the IP address of a printer. If your printer has a display, you can go to IPv4 Settings to see the printer’s IP address.
